MILLENNIUM

W hile many people might hear the word “chemist” and conjure up an image of a wild-haired figure mixing liquids by the flame of a Bunsen burner, the professionals who have trained to be in that position are as diverse as the substances and compounds they may encounter on a daily basis. During his 50-year career as a chemist and research scientist, John B. Barr wasn’t necessarily confined to a laboratory, but that didn’t mean his work was any less impactful. Mr. Barr earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University at Buffalo in 1954, a Master of Science from the University of Michigan in 1956, and a PhD from the Pennsylvania State University in 1961. That same year, he joined the staff of Corning Glass Works (now Corning Incorporated) as a research chemist, working there for a year before becoming a senior

research chemist for the Union Carbide Corporation, a subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company. After nine years in that capacity, he started working as a research scientist and then was a senior research scientist until 1982. He was employed by the chemicals company Amoco Performance Products from 1986 through 1995, prior to serving as a consultant for Research Opportunities, Inc. Now acting as an independent consultant to companies in the carbon fiber industry, Mr. Barr relies on the knowledge and experience he gained throughout his distinguished career, during which he obtained several patents and contributed articles to professional journals. A member of the North American Thermal Analysis Society, the American Carbon Society and the American Chemical Society, he received an award from the latter in 2003 as well as a fellowship through the Shell Oil Company. He has also been featured in several editions of Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in Science and Engineering.
