P hysiologists like Dr. Annette Beyer-Mears examine and monitor human organs and the respiratory, nervous and cardiac systems to diagnose and treat physiological disorders and long-term illnesses. Dr. Beyer-Mears has dedicated over five decades to the field of physiology. After graduating fromVassar College with a Bachelor of Arts in 1963, she became a National Institutes of Health fellow at Cornell University Medical School. In 1967 she relocated to Philadelphia, where she became a physiology instructor at Springside School. Wanting to further her knowledge, she obtained a Master of Science at Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1973 and became a teaching assistant in the department of physiology at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (now Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences) a year later. 2014, progressing into positions as an assistant professor, associate professor for the department of ophthalmology, and assistant professor and associate professor for the department of physiology. In addition to her lengthy career at Rutgers, she was also a visiting associate professor in the department of ophthalmology and vision science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1995 until 2014 and a consultant for Alcon Laboratories. She has contributed many articles on diabetes and kidney therapy to professional journals and is a member of the American Physiological Society, The American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the International Society for Eye Research, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Royal Society of Medicine, the International Diabetes Federation, and the American Diabetes Association. Dr. Beyer-Mears has received many awards and accolades for her tireless efforts, including the National Institutes of Health National Research Service Award and a research award from the Rutgers Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.
