D r. Daniel Botkin is a biologist, environmental scientist and writer who has been developing his knowledge and expertise for over four decades. Dr. Botkin has extensive experience assessing major environmental problems, such as the conservation of African

elephants, bowhead whales and salmon. At larger scales of space and time, he has helped with the conservation of fresh water and forest ecosystems, and improved urban ecosystems. He also has experience dealing with global environmental issues, including satellite remote sensing, biodiversity, the future of energy sources, and ecological and environmental computer modeling. To prepare for his successful career, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Rochester, a Master of Arts from the University ofWisconsin, and a Ph.D. fromRutgers University. From 1968 to 1976, he worked as an assistant professor and associate professor at Yale University. He continued to advance as an associate scientist for the Marine Biological Laboratory; a professor of biology, chairman of the environmental studies program, and director of the biology department’s program on global change at the University of California, Santa Barbara; and an adjunct professor in the University of Miami department of biology, a position he has held since 2013. Additionally, he has authored 20 books and many articles for scientists and the public that show how cultural legacies often dominate what people believe to be scientific solutions and discussed the roles of scientists, businessmen, stakeholders, and government agencies in creating new approaches to solve environmental issues. Throughout his career, Dr. Botkin has reached many achievements, including developing the first successful computer ecosystemmodel, being one of the first ecologists to investigate possible ecological effects of climate change, conducting extensive scientific studies of endangered species, and recovering wildlife population sizes and sea ice changes. He has led the development of the National Science Foundation’s long-term ecological research programwhile initiating NASA’s use of satellite remote sensing to study ecology from space. He utilized his expertise and skills to direct a five-year study on forests and salmon for the state of Oregon to direct a three-year study to conserve the 1.3 million birds using California’s Mono Lake and advisedTaiwan’s top-level government on applying modern ecological concepts to solve environmental problems, among many other accomplishments. Dr. Botkin is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Cosmos Club, and the Explorers Club. Daniel B.
