Dr. Branscomb’s outstanding work in the field is backed by many awards and accolades, including the Rockefeller Award, the Department of Commerce’s Gold Medal for Exceptional Service, the Japanese

Throughout his career, he has taken on the responsibilities given to him with aplomb, particularly as director of the National Bureau of Standards and chair of the Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics. Dr. Branscomb has been elected as a member of all three of the National Academies: Science, Engineering and Medicine, and given international membership to the Engineering Academy of Japan and the Russian Academy of Sciences. Dr. Branscomb holds a Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude, from Duke University, a Ph.D. from Harvard University, and 15 honorary doctoral degrees.
