A s an educator, Dr. Gene Burd has taught students the fundamentals to succeed in their careers as journalists. A rural Ozarks migrant to California in 1946, he earned an Associate of Arts from Pasadena City College, a Bachelor of Arts in political science and a Master of Science in journalism from UCLA, and a Ph.D. in urban studies from Northwestern University. Dr. Burd was a reporter for the Kansas City Star, the Albuquerque Journal and Three Rivers Commercial News, and editor of the Houston Chronicle's neighborhood news. He was also a city planning information writer and teacher at Columbia College Chicago. His teaching career was enriched by summer institutes at Aspen and Chautauqua, public information service with the U.S. Army Artillery in Germany, and time spent as a research assistant at the University

He was also a research associate for the Northwestern University Center for Metropolitan Studies and the Center for the Study of the American Press in Milwaukee, a visiting professor at the Institute for Urban Studies in Arlington, and a press and political consultant in Minneapolis and Denver. An active poet, he is a member of the American Academy for Poetry Therapy. Dr. Burd retired in 2014 after 50 years of teaching urban journalism at Marquette, Minnesota and Texas full time. He was the founding benefactor of the Urban Communication Foundation based in New York and Chicago and the founder of the Institute on Los Angeles Media and Politics for the Junior Statesmen of America, which named him Texas Statesman of the Year in 2008. He received the Distinguished Student Award from the American Legion in 1951, the Minority Student Services Award from the University of Texas in 1978, and the Distinguished Service Award from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication in 2012.
