J ames Leonard Checkel is a jack-of-all-trades, handling the responsibilities of farmer, technologist, and researcher. With over 30 years of professional experience in the field, Mr. Checkel serves as township supervisor for Ashland Township in Dodge Center, a position he has held since 2009. After purchasing his farm more than 25 years ago, he continues to produce crops and livestock. To prepare for his career, he earned an Associate of Arts from Rochester Community and Technical College in 1980. Before becoming the prominent farmer he is today, he began his career as a cell technologist for the Mayo Foundation in 1980. He delved into the agriculture industry, becoming a farmer for Checkel Farm in 2000 and earning a position on the Dodge County Farm Bureau in 2002. Mr. Checkel’s expertise and knowledge of the field have led to many achievements throughout his career, including patents for equipment hydraulic drive. Aside from his career, he continues to serve his community as chair of the Dodge County Association, a position he has held since 2013.

Mr. Checkel is a member of the Kasson-Mantorville Lions Club board of directors, Fairview Family Counsel and the Mayo Family Advisory Committee of Kasson. He was named Farmer of the Year by Dodge County MN Conservation and an Outstanding Alumnus in 2014. He has been featured in the 65 th through 70 th editions of Who’s Who in America.
