C riminal justice officials are faced with the important tasks of ensuring that the law is upheld, deterring crimes from being committed, and creating order within the judicial system. In such a profession, one must possess a certain grit to succeed. For Helen Corrothers, being a criminal justice official was the perfect fit, and she excelled phenomenally in that role. Ms. Corrothers was born in Montrose, Ark., on March 19, 1937. With a strong desire to make a difference in the world, she received a Bachelor of Science in business administration/ management at Roosevelt University, with honors, in 1965 and graduated from the Army Officer Candidate School as a distinguished graduate the same year. As a teenager she enlisted in the United States Army, working extremely hard to advance and become captain by 1969. She

served as director of housing for four cities while stationed at Giessen Army Depot in Germany from 1967 to 1969. Due to her strong military background, Captain Corrothers was ready to tackle corrections and the judicial system. She completed the Summer Institute for Criminal Justice Executives at the University of Chicago's Center for Continuing Education in 1973. She began her career in criminal justice as a social interviewer for the Arkansas Department of Corrections and later became superintendent of the department’s women’s unit. She continued to flourish after being named U.S. Parole Commissioner by the United States Department of Justice in 1983 and two years later receiving a judicial appointment to the U.S. Sentencing Commission. Her prosperous career also included being president of the American Correctional Association from 1990 to 1992 and a fellow of the U.S. Department of Justice from 1992 to 1995. Cap. Corrothers teaches Sunday school classes for men and women of all different ages and backgrounds, with some students hailing from Africa, South America, the Philippines and Jamaica.
