in some shape or form, but otherwise we probably ended up with the right number of festivals – after all, there are only so many most people can afford to attend. But, guys, let’s do a bit more sharing of diary dates in the coming 12 months: not only did Auckland City Limits clash withWOMAD this year, but also with the mighty Tom Jones at the Vector Arena! Speaking of which... while the festival season may be complete, there are still plenty of big gigs coming up at Vector and other large indoor arenas around the country. This month alone brings live sets from metal legends Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath, plus shows from the likes of Matt Corby, Twenty One Pilots, Jamie Lawson and Josh Groban. And with tours in the pipeline from artists as diverse as Rudimental, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Ellie Goulding and Bring MeThe Horizon, it looks as if there will be plenty of big name acts on hand to bring a little bit of cheer to the winter months ahead. T he conclusion of daylight saving means that summer really is pretty much over, and with it the annual festival season. While it didn’t quite turn out to be as spectacular as originally envisaged – Echo Festival andWestfest were among the most high profile cancellations – it was good to see established events such as Rhythm & Vines and Laneway continuing to flourish. Last month saw the season come to an end with two very different events. The inaugural Auckland City Limits festival got off to a promising start with electrifying sets from a good line-up of overseas and local artists; fingers crossed that thisWestern Springs one-dayer will become our very own Big Day Out. Meanwhile, we enjoyed ourselves immensely at WOMAD 2016, which as usual was held in New Plymouth. Standouts included Calexico (loved their take on the Love classic Alone Again Or ), a fun-loving retro set from hip hop veterans De La Soul (complete with an impressively funky live band), and the elegant electro pop of John Grant. Having said that, much of WOMAD’s appeal is down to discovering new artists you’ve never heard of, and in that vein we were very much taken with the joyous Middle Eastern dance beats of the French-based outfit Orange Blossom. Obviously it’s way too early to start thinking about 2017, but let’s hope for more of the same next year. It would be good to seeWestfest back
