Tonightts f~l Cal Western home game of the current 1 59~•60 season, marks the first intra-city contest between the 'Picineers from t:p.e University of San Diego and the Westerners from California Wes- tern University~ 3oth cage squads have approximately the same season records and have faca4 the West Coast 1 s best as far as tc-p rated small colleges go~ Western, basically a sophomore and freshmen team, has come a long way from its rugged eariy season start and has been improving raJ)idly in late season. Recently, Cal-Western has been sel!.ected to partici~ate in the NAIA Playoffs to be played at Pasadena or Claremont later this month~ :Pefense is the key to the Westerner attack. and head coach :Sob Kloppenberg•s f.orces a;-e currently ranked 14th in the N.AIA. CW has limited opponents to a mere 59. 2 ppg~ D iminutive 5-g guard, Jiro Takahashi is the key man in the attack, as he is the leading sco~er with a 10.0 average, and he posses an 833 free throw percentage which ranks him in the top 15 in the Ji,A...L\' statistics. - ~ Sop1'..omore center-forward Art Johnson and frosh forward Joe Treaster handle tee major share of the Western rebounding, but have been receiving able support from an,_; other soph, center Harvey Hall. Lilter in the month and prior to the NAIA Playoffs, Cal-Western will play in the Cal Poly Invitational Tournament in Pomona, facing the University of Calif. at Riverside in the opening round• and tl\en a rugged Grand Can.yon Colleg~ quint from Phoenix in the second round plr.;r. The tourney is 1 perhaps, oneof the West Coast 1 a. finest for NAIA clubs, Other teams participating include, Cal Poly, San Fernando State, and this same Univer- sity of San Diego squad. , The NAIA. Playoff invite is the second in as many years for the Westerners,· as last season they were defeated in the openin 6 ·round by Westmont. This year, Westmont ~d Pasadena Nazarene pair off in the •initial round with Western facing the loser~ The ~ioneers take .the floor tonight with somewhat of a height and experience advantage~ USD has defeated several of Southern California's toughest squads this season 1 and ~ely on the scoring of guard Jim Fleming, who is hitting at a 15.6 clip coming into tonight's game, and the strong rebounding of a pair of 6-4 front men 1 John Harper and Art Wical.

FACE LOYOLA TONIGHT Pioneer Hoping To End L.A. Hex The University of San· Diego hopes to• break its· Los Angeles jinx this weekend when coach Les Harvey's basketballers meet Loyola Unh·ersity and San Fernando State tonight and tomorrow night. The USO.Loyola game wiJI be the second meeUng between the two schools. USO lost to Loyola, 79-31, last season. This season the Pioneers have dropped :four gan1es in the L.A. area. , Meanwhile, guard Jim Fleming is leading USD in scoring with 328 points and an 'Rverage of 15.6 tor 21 games.
