By ,JOHNNY McDONALD Russ CPavens, a clutch-hit- tin~ junior forward, led the Umvcrsity of San Diego in th<' second half back f r o m what seemed sure defeat to upset Cal Western, 64-6.3, at Crawford High gym 1 a s t night. The Torcros, hitting a poor 25_ per cent from the floor and \~1th Cravens having a bad t1 me in the first half, roared back from an 18-point deficit to disrupt the usually unruf- flPd defensive-minded West- erners in the second half. Cravens hit six field goals and three of four free free throws for 15 points, all in the second portion of the con- test. However, he was second hlgh to teammate John Rob- bins, a 5-11 guard, who "~nn!'d 16 points. - Actually, it was Robbins' steady floor game that kept the Toreros alive in the first half and enabled th e m to c~tc~ fire in the second. He hit eight points in each half. Students in the p a c k e d gymnasium, rushed f r O m the USD stands and mobbed the Torcro players. c O a ch Bob Sexton was carried on the shoulders of several play. ers as they left the gym. It was somewhat reminis- cent of the last athletic con- test between the two schools. In that one, on the football field, USD blew a 12-0 lead to fall, 28-18, to the underdog Westerners. This was the first time in five meetings that the Toreros have been able to defeat coach Bob Kloppenburg's cagers. Morris Greenwood, whose pumping jump shot, and J oe Treaster, with a nifty hook shot, kept the Westerners in the chase through t he second period. Greenwood tanked 14 points while Treaster a nd Frank Fugate added 12 each. USD didn't catch the West- erners until 2 :08 was left in the game. Cra-,,ens hit a 15-foot jump shot to make it. 62-all. Then the Westerners' • game fell completely apart I and wild tosses gave USD an- other chance at the bucket. Art Wical laid It in with l ·14 to go. Duane Barnes of Cal West- ern missed a chance to tie it with one second left when he hit one of two free throws at- tPmpts. J ohnson's jump shot after a rebound rolled around the rim and out a nd that was all for the Westerners.
