Air-Minded Southern California College Out to Revenge 1959 Loss to Pioneers Coach Mike Pecarovich's University of San Diego football team seeks its second win of the season tonight when the Pioneers engage Southern California College. The Pioneers were sluggish in their 14-6 win over visiting Azusa College last Saturday night. The Pioneer pass- ing attack apparently rusted during the 13-day layoff and quarterback Jan Chapman completed only five of 12 passes for 18 yards. Pecarovich, after reviewing films of the Azusa game, said he hoped that Chapman's passing would be more effec- tive against Southern California. Chapman has completed 33 of 69 passes attempted for 289 yards and two touchdowns. The Southern California Vanguards have one of the west coast's outstanding all-around small college performers in quarterback Bill Severn. Severn, a muscular 5-11, 175-pounder who played at Los Angeles Valley J.C., combined with teammate John Alsup last year to complete 17 of 38 passes attempted for 212 yards against the Pioneers. Alsup has graduated. USD defeated Southern California 38-14 when the two teams met last season. The Vanguards, however, outgained outpassed and out-first downed the Pioneers. Southern California enters tonight's game with a 3-2 record, They defeated Pomona College frosh, 34 -28 lost to Claremont-Mudd, 6-28 and Azusa College, 0-14 and have won successive victories from Seal Beach Marines, 56-0, and Long Beach State College frosh, 28-26. Severn completed 16 of 22 passes attempted against Seal Beach for 273 yards. He completed 16 of 41 passes attempted in Southern California's first two games for 197 yards. Quarterback and head coach Severn operates from a slot-t formation. He is supported in the backfield by halfback Sam Higgins (185), fullback Harold Robertson (175) and slotback Loren Graf (155). Southern California's line is anchored by tackles Dave English (200) and Chuck Burnett (210) and two-year letter- man Jerry Owens (190) at right guard. USD halfbacks Joe Loeschnig and Joe Gray and fullback Jim DeSantis all performed with brilliance in their debut at Westgate Park. Loeschnig gained 67 yards in 17 carries, Gray gained 88 yards in 12 carries and scored one touchdown and Desantis gained 114 yards in 20 carries and scored once. Gray capped a 65-yard Pioneer drive in the first quarter and scored on a seven yard end sweep with 9:10 remain- ing. Freshman Pat Long recovered a fumble on the Azusa 25. Desantis capped a short drive by scoring from the four on a slant off left guard. Chapman passed to end Mike McDevitt for the extra points. Azusa scored as the final gun sounded when reserve quarterback passed six yards to end Tom Nelson. The Pio- neers outrushed Az;usa 253 to 71, and out-first downed the visitors, 13-8.

MIKE McDEVITT, a 6-0, 185 pound end, starts to- night on the Pioneer lineup. Mike, a sophomore was an all-Catholic league end at Loyola High in Los Angeles.
