annual dinner at the Ellesmere Golf Club, Worsley, Manchester. A couple of days prior to the event ominous weather warnings began to come from the Met Office. With red alert snow warnings I seriously considered cancelling the event. However there appeared to be a reprieve as the forecast changed, it was definitely rain, not snow, that would affect us. On the day it started to snow about 3pm but it was light and manageable so we decided to go for it. On arrival it was snowing a little harder, but we were confident that it would not last. Every now and then someone would look through the window and report “It’s still snowing.” The event went really well, the food was good, the company was even better and our guest speaker Brian White, an ex-Greater Manchester police officer, gave a brilliant speech about policing and later showed his incredible collection of walking sticks. Not only did it not stop snowing it actually got heavier. So we broke up early because of the deteriorating weather conditions. The snow on the car park was at least a foot thick. Branch Chair, Bill Lloyd, who must have been a boy scout, ‘be prepared’, produced a shovel from his boot and dug out members’ cars. Once on the road outside the club and on the steep hill to the main road we were having our problems. A passing group of youths came to our rescue as one by one, without being asked, they helped push all our cars up the hill. The annual dinner turned out to be quite an adventure - next year it’s the Himalayas! David Tetlow , Bolton Branch National Bowling Tournament Announced The National Bowling Tournament will be held on Sunday 11 August, 2013, at the Wellingborough Bowling Club, Hatton Street, Wellingborough, NN8 5AS - 10am to 5pm - dependant on the number of teams taking part.
