Preventative maintenance Recommendations for correct assembly of a clutch kit

4.2.2 Cover Assembly

1. Cover Assembly Tips

4.2 Recommendations for a correct assembly of the clutch kit 4.2.1 Clutch disc ●● General aspect: no shock, no deformation and no grease on the clutch facings. ●● Splines: make sure that the disc slides smoothly on the gearbox input shaft.

Aspect ●● Without shock, check the shape of the straps (no deformation allowed). ●● No grease, on the friction surface of the pressure plate.

Assembly ●● Bolt the positioning pins onto the flywheel. ●● Use an appropriate tool to carry and handle the cover assembly. ●● Center the cover assembly on the flywheel, according to existing flywheel configuration (pins or centring steps). Bolting ●● Install the fixing bolts, starting from the bottom. ●● Remove the guide pins and replace them by remaining bolts. ●● Tighten the bolts progressively, depending on the centring method on the flywheel, up to the recommended torque (defined by the bolt diameters and their class). Check Check the slip of the centring tool. If necessary, the tool has to be held during bolting operation. Check Check the position of the diaphragm. When using a new clutch disc, the belleville washer must be flat and the height of finger tips must be equal. Attention Ɂ Ɂ A wrong bolting process may induce a wrong assembly and even deteriorate the flywheel step.

Attention Ɂ Ɂ It is not necessary to apply grease on the splines when the hub is nickel coated.

●● Apply a reasonable quantity of grease on the hub splines: using appropriate grease except when it is not necessary for example with nickel coated hub. (see the manufacturer's recommendations and Valeo's). ●● Assemble the clutch disc on the right side (in general, the longest part of hub is on cover assembly side). ●● Center the disc on the flywheel with a suitable tool (centring shaft, refer to the picture below).

Advice   Mounting direction is often written on Valeo clutch discs or inside the box (cf. notice for no grease on splines).

Correct shape of the strap

Attention All straps sets must be checked carefully. Even if only one set of straps is deformed, it can affect the release performance of the clutch. Advice   The examination of the strap sets must be done before assembling the cover assembly on the flywheel.  The check must be done even on a new cover assembly since the straps might be damaged during transportation or during handling.
