Klee worked with many different types of media—oil paint, watercolor, ink, and more. The Baer drawing is an example of spontaneous or automatic drawing, popular at this period, by which the artist attempted to express his innermost feelings. The resulting fantastic figures become pictorial symbols of emotional states which Klee then sought to analyze in his notebooks.
