Coolmore America Handbook 2019

Although Mo Town’s juvenile victories were gained on dirt, he proved his versatility by developing into a leading turf performer at three, when he won the Gr.1 Hollywood Derby in a very fast time from the future Gr.1 Turf Classic winner Channel Maker. Even though he did so well on turf, Mo Town has the pedigree of a dirt performer. His dam represents the highly successful partnership which Bernardini has enjoyed with mares by Carson City. From 20 foals it has produced the Gr.1 winners Cavorting and A Z Warrior, the Gr.2 winner Wilburn and the Gr.3 winner Gala Award. Mo Town’s second dam, Molto Vita was a fast dirt performer winning a Gr.3 at Keeneland over six furlongs and was twice placed at Gr.1 level. The next dam, Princess Polonia, was a Gr.3-winning daughter of DANZIG . She too was a dirt performer. With his stallion career in mind it is worth noting that Mo Town hails from the same female family as RAISE A NATIVE , an outstanding sire whose progeny include MR PROSPECTOR , ALYDAR and MAJESTIC PRINCE . Mo Town’s sire Uncle Mo has thrived with mares from the MR PROSPECTOR line and there is no reason why Mo Town shouldn’t follow suit, as his line of Mr Prospector will be back in the fifth generation of his foals’ pedigrees. The GONE WEST branch provided Uncle Mo with Gr.1 winner Gomo and Gr.3 winner Lost Raven (both out of daughters of ELUSIVE QUALITY ) and Gr.2 winner Laoban (out of a SPEIGHTSTOWN mare). UNBRIDLED is the broodmare sire of Uncle Mo’s Gr.1 winner Unbridled Mo and Uncle Mo owes his Gr.1 Wood Memorial winner Outwork and Gr.3 winner Uncle Vinny to daughters of EMPIRE MAKER and UNTUTTABLE . RUBBIANO supplied the dam of another Gr.3 winner, Mo Tom and there are also Graded-placed performers with dams by UNBRIDLED’S SONG and QUIET AMERICAN . Uncle Mo’s Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist has a second dam by SEEKING THE GOLD (also broodmare sire of Gr.1-placed Conquest Mo Money) and Uncle Mo has talented winners with dams by TWO PUNCH , FUSAICHI PEGASUS , CRAFTY PROSPECTOR , CARSON CITY and BLACK TIE AFFAIR . He has the Gr.1 winner Dream Tree from an AFLEET ALEX mare and Gr.3 winner Name Changer from a NORTHERN AFLEET mare. STREET CRY mares produced two of Uncle Mo’s highest-priced 2018 yearlings. Uncle Mo has quickly proved himself with the STORM CAT line, siring the outstanding Nyquist and the Gr.3 winner Auntie Joy from daughters of FORESTRY and the Gr.3 winner Ultra Brat from a STORM CAT mare. He also has Graded-placed winners with dams by GIANT’S CAUSEWAY and SCAT DADDY . A.P. INDY will be back in the fourth generation of Mo Town’s foals, so duplications to this champion sire are an option. Mo Town should do well with mares by all the successful stallions from the A.P. Indy-Mr Prospector cross, such as PULPIT , MINESHAFT , FLATTER and CONGRATS , and daughters of TAPIT are worth considering. In view of Mo Town’s success on turf, the SADLER’S WELLS line is a likeable option. Daughters of EL PRADO , MEDAGLIA D’ORO and KITTEN’S JOY are candidates. Uncle Mo already has black-type winners out of daughters of DEPUTY MINISTER and DEFRERE . Uncle Mo sired the Gr.3 winner Royal Mo from a SAINT BALLADO mare and he has two Graded-placed fillies out of MORE THAN READY mares. DEL MAR, Calif. -- When the year began, trainer Tony Dutrow justly believed Mo Town was his derby horse. Turns out, he was right. It wasn't the Derby the first Saturday in May, rather a derby on the last Saturday in November... But make no mistake, Mo Town is back in the top form that made him one of the best 2-year-olds of 2016… Mo Town got his derby win, proving much the best in the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby Jay Privman , , Nov. 26, 2017
