ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT Economic Impacts of Using Byproducts as Dairy Feeds in California BACKGROUND: California dairy use of crop byproducts for feed reduces waste and environmental consequences and facilitates positive contributions to the economy. To date, no studies have comprehensively assessed the economic and environmental impacts of using byproducts for feed in California. OBJECTIVES: Measure the amount of feed byproducts used by the California dairy industry, estimate alternative feed costs if byproducts were not used, and simulate the economic and environmental effects of using byproducts as dairy feeds in California. INDUSTRY BENEFIT: Allow for accurate communication regarding the central role of dairy in the agricultural economy and highlight a positive environmental contribution.
