ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT Regional Dairy Farmer-to-Farmer AMMP Project Tours and Awareness Outreach BACKGROUND: Dairy size, layout, housing, feed and other factors impact manure management options as well as associated methane emission amounts. Modifying existing facilities, housing and manure handing can be expensive and, in some instances, almost impossible. CDFA has funded Alternative Manure Management Projects (AMMP) on numerous California dairy operations. OBJECTIVE: Develop and deliver a minimum of four dairy regional demonstration tours over a two-year period; Develop and deliver a minimum of three topic-based practice highlight videos; Develop and deliver a minimum of four producer-experience highlight videos; Develop and deliver up to 12 producer-experience quick-facts one-page sheets; Develop and deliver a minimum of one AMMP practice topic-specific webpage; Evaluate success of outreach plan and adoption of AMMP practices. INDUSTRY BENEFIT: This project will provide substantial information and awareness opportunities to bolster dairy farmer understanding and adoption of AMMP practices. Farmer-to-farmer information sharing is a key component to producer knowledge and also for confidence in methane reduction practice evaluation and adoption. Allowing farmers to “kick the tires” on new technologies and practices encourages deeper evaluation and adaptation to their individual farm situation and fosters greater likelihood of adoption.
