ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT Validating Nitrogen Fixing Ability of Previously Identified Microorganisms in Manure BACKGROUND: Previous DNA sequencing work has identified bacteria in the manure of cows on California dairy farms that has demonstrated the potential to fix nitrogen. OBJECTIVE: Determine if these predicted strains of bacteria in dairy manure can indeed fix nitrogen. INDUSTRY BENEFIT: Knowledge of the nitrogen fixing ability of bacteria in manure can lead to the development of strategies to increase the abundance of these organisms to improve the fertilization potential of manure.
