IIW 2018 Annual Report

FOCUS ON WELDING INNOVATION: Indonesia hosts 71 ST IIW annual assembly

Well organised and hosted by the Indonesian Welding Society, activities during the 71st IIW Annual Assembly held in Bali in July 2018 included the General Assembly of Member Societies and meetings of the 20 IIW Technical Commissions and Study Groups, Working Units in the areas of Regional Ac- tivities and Standardisation, Board of Directors, Technical Management Board and the International Authorisation Board. The ambiance and culture of Bali and the warmth of its people permeated through all activities at the Annual Assembly, promoting a welcoming atmosphere of cooperation and communication and allaying any fears of the rumbling Mount Agung volcano. International networking were enhanced through a Young Professionals programme, the Opening Ceremony which saw the presentation of prestigious IIW Awards followed by the Welcome Reception, an Indonesian night, Gala Banquet and the International Conference.

“International networking and cooperation are the essence of IIW, bringing together the best and bri- ghtest to tackle the challenges faced by today’s global industry. The warm Balinese culture was a perfect fit for what we refer to as our ‘family’ at IIW, and the out- comes for the week were outstanding in all aspects of our activities.” Mr Doug Luciani (Canada), IIW President 2017-2020

Participation in IIW technical activities, pathways to publication, along with mentoring and career networ- king, draw significant numbers of Young Professionals and students to each IIW Annual Assembly and International Conference – over 200 in Bali this year.

Two special Young Professionals events were held during the Annual Assembly, and participation in all the week’s activities was encouraged through regular newsletters leading up to the event, as well as a ‘passport’ to gather endorsement for attending WU meetings, the Trade and Poster Exhibitions, and other activities. Lighter highlights of the programme included an icebreaker event and beach party with Indonesian games including a tug of war. These team building activities helped people to get to know each other, to meet international experts and Board members, and to build lasting international friendships and professional cooperation.
