Facts to Remember • Maryland was a proprietorship which means that the proprietor had executive authority. • Religious freedom for different sects of Christianity was widespread, especially after the passage of the Act of Toleration in 1649 which allowed for toleration to all Christians. Maryland eventually became known as a 'haven for Catholics'. North Carolina and South Carolina The area of North Carolina was populated from settlers who pushed into the area from Virginia due to overflow. South Carolina, however, was settled by English planters from the islands of Barbados. They founded Charlestown and with them they brought the full institution of slavery right away, unlike the other colonies that used indentured servants initially. Rice became the staple crop of the area. The Carolinas remained one colony until 1729 and because of internal problems, the English took over the colony and formed North and South Carolina . Facts to Remember • The lost colony of Roanoke was located in what is now Outer banks, North Carolina • The settlers of the area of South Carolina brought the full institution of slavery without transition • It remained one colony until 1729 until it was split into two New York After the English took the Dutch Colony, New Netherlands in 1664, James, the Duke of York, received control. The name of the colony was changed to New York in his honor. Under the leadership of Richard Nichols, New York granted many civil and political rights. Facts to Remember • Originally a Dutch colony, the English claimed it as their own New Jersey In 1664, James, the Duke of York, received control of New Netherland. The colony quickly grew due to its assembly and progressive democratic ideals. Quakers eventually purchased both of their charters and created East and West Jersey, which were joined by the English crown in 1702.
