Karin Pohl, manager of The Core Irish Pub, extends a warmwelcome and a cold drink to everyone. Guests of all ages love the cosy and convivial atmosphere, the pub food, and the tempting choice of drinks. Sláinte! Karin Pohl and Beppi Niederberger of The Core Irish Pub in the hear t of Engelberg got their business idea during a trip to Scotland in 2009. They were sitting in the pub one evening and realised that they wanted to open a similar place in Engelberg – “a place where young and old can sit together, chatting, eating, drinking

The Core sells a wide range of beers. Of the 15 regular brews three are Irish: Guinness, Smithwick ’s and Kilkenny. A genuine Irish cider is also available on tap. To ease the agony of choice, you can order a tasting tray with three or five 100 ml glasses. The pub also serves typical Irish pub food. “I attended cookery courses in Ireland,” says Karin. “We make our food ourselves – the sauces, the marinades, the beer batter for the Chicken Fingers.” The games room, with a pool table and dar tboard, is actually more traditionally Irish

strangers would buy us a Guinness, just be- cause we’d been to the same concer t as them.” Karin and Beippi got in touch with Òl Irish Pubs, a company that has designed and fitted out authentic Irish pubs across the world, from Dubai to Arizona – and now, in Engel- berg. In November 2016, eight Irish workmen came to the village with two huge shipping containers, and The Core Irish Pub was cre- ated as if by magic within two weeks. The tiler spent days kneeling on the f loor, fitting each tile in place, while painters decorated the walls. All the additional decorations – such as books, pictures, sewing machines – also came over from Ireland. Pub manager Karin and pub owner Beppi decided to let the design profes- sionals shape the pub the way they knew best – they didn’ t even see the carpet pattern until a month before work began. were forbidden from entering pubs; they had to wait for their husbands outside. Therefore small, private rooms were installed to make their wait a little cosier. In these more emanci- pated days, men are allowed into the snug, too. The choice of the name “The Core” is a reference to the pub’s location in the new “Dorfzentrum” at the hear t of Engelberg. The pub’s logo, inspired by illustrations from the Book of Kells, was designed by Hampi Krähenbühl, a graphic designer from Nid- walden. One more Irish touch in the pub is its telephone number, 637 1916. The last four digits are the year of the Easter Rebellion. Pubs have played a decisive role in Karin Pohl ’s life. Originally from Engadin, she came to Engelberg in November 1988 to work at the Angel Pub in the Engel hotel. She had seen the job ad in the Hotel Revue but first she had to dig out a map to find out where Engelberg even was. Since then, it’s been the place she’s been happy to call home.
