UNIVERSITY PROFILE The University of San Diego is an independent , Catholic university located on a 170-acre mesa over– looking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbo r, and the Pacific Ocean . The campus is named Al cala Park after the Spanish university town where St . Di dacu s (i .e. , Diego) spent much of his time . Complementing its splendid natural setting is t he University's location just 10 minutes from downtown San Diego - conveniently close to the major busi ness, cultural , residential , and recreational areas, as we ll as the rail , bus and air terminals . Founded in 1949, USO is present ly experienci ng record attendance . Undergraduate en roll ment stands at 2,526, graduate students bring the overall campus enrollment to 4300 . The University includes a College of A rts and Sci– ences , and Schools of Business Admi nistration , Edu– cation , Nursing , and Law. Each is cha racterized by high academic standards, small classes, and excel– lent student-faculty relations . Though the majority of students come from the West Coast, every region of the United States is well– represented on campus . Students also attend USO from 24 foreign countries. Recreation and Athletic activities are expandi ng rapidly and include: sailing , crew, yoga, karate, su rf– ing , modern dance, back-packing , and ballet. USD 's intercollegiate sports for men include baseball , foo t– ball , basketball , cross-country , golf, soccer, crew, and tennis. In women 's intercollegiate sports , USO fields pro– grams in basketball , cross-country , crew, softbal l, swimming, tennis, and volleybal l.
