A MESSAGE FROM THE WARDEN

Dear Tourists , Some of the best experiences in your sporting lives will come from touring and I could not commend it more highly. Certainly the camaraderie that comes from playing a great game in places far from home will prove to be some of your best memories of both School and sport. You are all fortunate enough already to be playing an important role in St Edward’s illustrious cricketing history. Remember that you will be taking a noble tradition of hard work and fair play abroad with you; and you will be playing one of the best games ever invented. The relationship between this School and cricket has a long and distinguished past going back almost to our foundation; such great names as Sir Russell Bencraft, Teddy Wynyard DSO OBE and Paul Gibb have gone before you and should serve as an inspiration for you.

As you head out on tour it is appropriate to remember the glories of our School’s playing past, both recent and historic. Not to carry the burden of expectation on your shoulders, but rather to keep in mind the legacy which goes with you and the privilege that is yours; to be a tourist from Teddies in Barbados – a nation that celebrates with fervour this finest of games. Revel in that zeal and play with your usual determination, character and good grace as you represent Teddies and build in preparation for another excellent season to come. With very best wishes for Barbados, Stephen Jones

of a golden age and can, with one of the most successful records in the country (on a circuit that includes the likes of Eton, Harrow and Radley), fairly claim to be one of the top Cricketing schools in the country. Last summer the 1st XI won the prestigious John Harvey Cup for the fourth time in only six seasons, with captain Harrison Ward and leading run scorer, Ben Charlesworth, subsequently gaining selection for the England U19 squad. Recent leaver Miles Hammond also had a breakthrough season with Gloucestershire; scoring his maiden first-class century against Sussex and shining in the Vitality Blast. However, the most impressive feat must surely belong to current pupil Ben Charlesworth, who made his first-class debut for Gloucestershire in July; scoring two half centuries and taking four wickets in his first three matches. Ben is currently on tour with the England U19’s in Bangladesh, which is why he is not with us in Barbados. Last year, we also launched a girls’ Cricket programme, with a healthy number of girls enjoying developing their batting and bowling skills and their general understanding of the game. This season sees us enter the Girls’ National U15 Cup for the first time, with the future looking promising. Cricket at St Edward’s is currently in great shape, and our pre-season tour to Barbados will provide the boys with a fantastic opportunity to challenge themselves and develop their skills in a different environment, whilst also fostering a strong team spirit and, above all, forging new friendships and enjoying everything Barbados has to offer! Peter Swainson

St Edward’s enjoys a proud and distinguished cricketing history. The earliest records of a School Cricket XI date back to 1873. Since then it has produced a number of exceptional XIs and notable Cricketers. Foremost among these is R H Bencraft, the ‘father’ of Hampshire Cricket who acted as their first president, secretary and captain. Then there is E G Wynyard, who played three Tests for England, followed by P Hutchinson, who took a School record 118 wickets in the 1880 season and played two Tests for South Africa in 1889, and A M de Labat, who represented New Zealand from 1890 to 1897. Interestingly, de Labat still holds the oldest School cricketing record remaining: 267 wickets in a 1st XI career! P A Gibb, who played in eight Tests for England, has the great distinction of scoring 93 and 106 on Test debut against South Africa in 1938. The School has produced multiple first-class Cricketers too; the most notable in recent history being T H C Hancock, who scored 8,485 runs for Gloucestershire in 185 matches, as well as 15 Blues. The 1st XI has had two unbeaten seasons – under the captaincy of Peter Thackeray in 1968 and Olly Martin in 1998. However, over the last decade, the Club has entered something

Watching the team’s progress will be of particular interest for us at the Ageas Bowl, having developed an exciting partnership with the School. The programme was developed with a view to linking talented players at the School with the Hampshire program. Although in its infancy, the signs are good and we are looking forward to a close working relationship with St Edward’s in the future. Writing this, I’m already feeling slightly jealous! If you can make the most of every opportunity on the pitch and

A message to the Teddies tourists , I was flattered to be asked to pen a few words for your St Edward’s tour to Barbados this February. The tour will provide a great opportunity for you to challenge your skills against strong opposition with an infectious passion for the game. It’s an island steeped in cricketing history and some of the best players to have played the game have come from Barbados. Hampshire Cricket has a great affinity with the island having visited Barbados for our pre-season training

give it a good go, I’ve no doubt the tour will be a great success, regardless of results. Enjoy the island and everything it has to offer. Have a great trip, Giles White

camps since 2010; it is an amazing place to play cricket. You will find the local people refreshingly welcoming, the scenery and beaches stunning; there is no better place to tour. Make the most of it, you’ll bring home many memories that will live with you for years to come.

talented cricketers. Maybe we can have a few English cricketers come over and play a season of cricket in Barbados. I would really like to extend my best wishes to the boys from St Edward’s. I’m sure your families will be coming along and I do encourage them to get out and enjoy what we have to offer here in Barbados, hoping that many of your players can go back to the UK much improved and keeping the spirit of the game alive, enhancing the growth of the sport. Jason Holder

As a youngster growing up playing cricket I always relished the opportunities presented to play against English touring sides. For me, it was a great way to gauge where my cricket was at in comparison to other junior cricketers around the world. Over the years, many teams have enjoyed touring Barbados, not only because of the great standard of cricket, but we can usually boast of wonderful hospitality. I’m sure today our Barbadian cricketers feel the same way about playing against English touring teams, and I can safely say that what has been evident is the opportunity of scholarships to England for many of our young

JOHN WOODCOCK OBE OSE, President of the Cricket Writers’ Club (1986–2004), Editor of Wisden (1981–1986), Times Cricket Correspondent (1954–1988).

All three were among the finest batsmen of any generation, and all were born and lived within six months and a few miles of each other on an island comparable in size to our Isle of Wight. Barbadians are among the most natural of all cricketers – not quite as dominant collectively, perhaps, as when they took on a Rest of the World XI and held their own, but still tremendously keen and a real handful on their own island. If the local teams you play were to be competing in the John Harvey Cup, I have no doubt they would be in the running were it held in the West Indies – though perhaps not in the Home Counties – so you can expect a stern test unlike those you will face on your own circuit. The average Bajan enjoys nothing more than emulating the greatest fast bowlers of the day. Tony Lewis, the former England captain, tells the story of a couple of waiters in one of the fine hotels up the west coast, the Coral Reef Club, who asked him if they could bowl at him in the nets. Thinking it was a good opportunity for some batting practice he agreed, but he got rather more than he bargained for as one bouncer after another rained down upon him! Take note that the locals, for their part, can be seriously uncomfortable against accurate spin. Whatever you do, keep smiling, respect the sun, remember that one rum punch is dangerous and two can make a fool of you, have a marvellous time and thank your lucky stars for the experience of a lifetime.

This is probably no bad time, so soon after England’s two heavy defeats by the West Indies, to be having to play cricket in the small Caribbean island most renowned for its flair and love for the game. It will serve as a reminder that Teddies will need to be at their best to match the excitement of the environment and to make up in their own way for England’s recent setbacks. Only India produce batsmen as instinctively talented as those from Barbados. The island’s reputation as one of the great cricket nurseries dates from the 1940s and the emergence of three legendary batsmen: the three ‘Ws’, as they were known, of Clyde Walcott, Everton Weekes and Frank Worrell.

To the St Edward’s tour party to Barbados , I am happy to write to you ahead of what I hope will be an experience of a sporting lifetime in Barbados. I am certain your school will gain valuable experience while playing in the many fixtures arranged for your tour. I know for sure that Graeme and his colleagues will match you competitively and many bonds and lasting friendships will be forged during your stay in Barbados.

Pre-season tours are gold dust in my opinion. They help to bring the squad together, give you a chance to get outdoors and test your skills in realistic conditions, in match scenarios. It gives you a head start on everybody else, so it’s a great opportunity that you’ve got to take with both hands. It’s a real privilege.  I was lucky enough to go to South Africa with Teddies a few years back, and it still lives long in the memory. Don’t hold back, enjoy and express yourself in everything you do, whether it’s on or off the park.    Go well everyone, hope it’s a good ‘un. Miles Hammond
