Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity Planning

Business Continuity Planning  Business continuity planning focuses on the ability to continue to conduct business during and after a failure or disaster.  Business continuity planning is not data centric; it is business centric.

 Business continuity planning process should include the resumption and maintenance of all aspects of the business, including employees and facilities, and not just recovery of the technology components  Plans should be based on a risk assessment/threat analysis and business impact analysis—which identifies recovery time objectives and potential data retention time frames. The goal is to create recovery strategies and priorities.  Disaster Recovery Planning is a subset of Business Continuity Planning. Disaster Recovery Planning allows a business to plan what needs to be done immediately after a disaster to recover from the event.

Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity Planning Disaster Recovery Planning It intended to guide management in the recovery process should a disaster, natural or otherwise, occur.  Disaster Recovery Planning focuses on what needs to be done immediately during and after a disaster to recover from the event.  DRP often focuses on the technical recovery of systems and data.  Recovery for critical IT (and other) assets, back up data, and business locations must be included in the plan.  DRP often includes incident response, emergency response, damage assessment, evacuation plans, etc.  Testing and training are vital for the ongoing operational effectiveness and validation of disaster recovery planning.
