IIW 2016 Annual Report

WELDING IN THE WORLD

EDITORS: Prof. Dr-Eng. John C. Lippold (USA) Prof. Dr-Ing. Thomas Böllinghaus (Germany) Prof. Dr-Eng. Ian Richardson (The Netherlands) Prof. Bruno de Meester (2nd from left), a former Editor of Welding in the World , received a recognition award for contributions to IIW over 40 years. The Editors wish to thank all who contribute to the quality of the journal including authors, chairs and co-chairs, principal reviewers and members of the review panel, the Editorial Board, the IIW Scientific Officer and staff, and the support staff at Springer. The tremendous growth in the number of papers submitted to Welding in the World has required tremendous effort by both the peer review panel and produc- tion staff. The recent success of the journal re- flects the combined contributions of this group. We look forward to the continued growth and recognition of our journal.

More than 400 papers were submitted to Welding in the World in 2016 - 130 papers were recom- mended by IIW Working Groups at the Annual Assembly and 283 papers were submitted via open submission. In 2016, Welding in the World published 6 issues that included 119 papers on fundamental and applied research associated with materials joining. Of the 2016 papers, 35% discussed welding processes, 30% addressed metallurgy and materials and 30% structural in- tegrity, fracture and fatigue. An agreement with Springer-Nature in mid-2016 increased the pu- blication rate to 20 papers per issue with a hi- gher rate possible in 2017. Welding in the World papers represented nearly 500 citations in 2016, and close to 60,000 down- loads. According to the Thomson Reuters Jour- nal Citation Reports (JCR) Welding in the World was ranked as 37 th of 73 journals in the field of Metallurgy and Metallurgical Engineering with the Impact Factor 0.861 for 2015. An increase to close to 1.0 is anticipated for 2016 when official values are announced in mid-2017.

«WiW is a big part of the ‘being seen’ at an international level for a young researcher. You get your name out there and get feedback from colleagues through the reviewing process. I think it is very important that young people get involved in that early. After my PhD I was immediately encouraged to also ‘see the other side’ of the process, so I am serving as a reviewer, and even as a principal reviewer now. Again, this is about staying in touch with developments and people in the field and at the same time improving my own research work and publishing»
