2016 IIW ANNUAL ASSEMBLY: SPIRIT OF COOPERATION ‘DOWN UNDER’

Over 700 people from 48 different nations gathered in Melbourne, Australia from 10 to 15 July 2016 to share their knowledge and vision at the 69 th IIW An- nual Assembly and International Conference. The assembly was hosted by the local Member Society, the Welding Technology Institute of Australia (WTIA). The week opened with the General Assembly of the Institute, attended by representatives of the 59 Member Countries. The meeting endorsed the re- newal of the Board of Directors, welcoming new Board members and thanking those who had com- pleted their terms of office. Similarly, the composition of the TMB was approved by the members. Reports were received from the Treasurer and Secretariat and strategic planning for the coming year approved.

IIW President Prof. Gary Marquis welcomed parti- cipants and their partners at the official Opening Ceremony on the Sunday evening, introducing Mr Wayne Hayes, General Manager Industry and Innovation at DCNS Australia, the Platinum Spon- sor for the week. His presentation demonstrated why this French company was the recently-an- nounced preferred international partner for the design of the multi-billion dollar ‘Future Sub- marines’ for the Royal Australian Navy. It also highlighted the global nature of modern industry and the positive role that IIW, its Working Units and Member Societies can play in the internatio- nal arena.
