YOUNG PROFESSIONALS Two Young Professionals events were held in Melbourne aimed at the new generation of experts and both were well attended - there were 110 young professionals and students attending the Annual Assembly and International Conference. There was clearly a true willingness by those that attended to not only enhance their own experience within the IIW Annual Assembly but also to pave the way for many other young professionals to come behind them. The ideas received will be incorporated into Board of Directors Task Group - Young Leaders (TG-YL) strategies to promote youth attendance at future Annual Assemblies and participation in other IIW events and activities. The 2017 Annual Assembly in Shanghai, P.R. China promises to have more than 150 young profes- sionals in attendance, with networking events introducing them to the work and people of IIW as well as giving exposure to potential employers.

OTHER ACTIVITIES The Melbourne Annual Assembly provided an outstanding opportunity for the ‘IIW family’ to network, meet old friends and make new ones, and enjoy each other’s company at events such as the welcome recep- tion, Australian evening and closing celebration. Technical visits during the week gave visitors a closer understanding of the construction and manufacturing industries in Australia as well as world-leading research facilities, such as the CSIRO Centre of Excellence for 3D printing and the Australian Synchrotron. The Wednesday night dinner saw the closing of the 69 th Annual Assem- bly and the time-honoured passing of the IIW flag to the organisers of the following year’s event to be held in Shanghai, P.R. China from 25 to 30 June 2017. RECOGNITION OF SERVICE AND ATTENDANCE IIW acknowledged the significant contributions made by those who Chair IIW Working Units, and this year Mr Luca Costa congratulated Mr Chris Smallbone (Australia) for his work in leading C-XIV Education and training as well as his commitment to establishing the IIW Education, Training, Qualification and Certification Programmes over many years. Throughout the week, presentations of lapel pins and certificates were made to individuals who had attended 10 or more Annual Assemblies. Prof. Dr-Ing. Bruno de Meester was congratulated on 40 years of active participation in IIW, and four people; Dr Arpad Kövěs (Slovenia), Mr Henk Bodt (The Netherlands), Dr-Ing. Vaclav Minarik (Czech Re- public) and Prof. Dorin Dehelean (Romania) received pins for 20 years’ attendance. A further six people were acknowledged for 10 years’ at- tendance; Dr Marc Harzenmoser (Switzerland), Mr Ismo Meuronen (Finland), Mr Henryk G. Pisarski (UK), Ms Anne Rorke (Australia), Mika Sirén (Finland) and Dr Nadezhda Volkova (Russian Federation).
