From fragrant kebab to herbed vegetables, rice dishes, sweet dried fruits and nut medleys, Afghan recipes are often centuries old and reflect the vibrant culture of the country. On March 21, the first day of the Afghan New Year , Afghan communities join other groups across the Middle East and Central Asia to celebrate Nowruz, or “new day” in Persian, by sharing special traditional food dishes with family and friends. afhganistan Culture Corner In Trinidad and Tobago, calypso music was originally used to spread news and express political dissent through freewheeling lyrics with a satirical bite. Today, calypso is popular across the Caribbean and is still used to share current events. In fact, a local calypso artist in Saint Lucia, Herb Black , recently celebrated USAID’s Community, Family and Youth Resilience program with a song called “Building Resilience.” Did You Know?
