General Information Codes and Standards Circuit Protection Guidelines

For some products, incoming line fuses are required to meet the basic UL listing requirements. Consult AF-6 Series individual drive Design Guides for fuse recommendations. The NEC defines several types of control circuits and the overcurrent protection required for each type. Type Enclosures: IP00, IP20, IP21, IP54, IP55 and IP66 NEMA 1: Enclosures constructed for either indoor or outdoor use to provide a degree of protection to personnel against incidental contact with the enclosed equipment and to provide a degree of protection against falling dirt. NEMA 4: Enclosures constructed for either indoor or outdoor use to provide a degree of protection to personnel against incidental contact with the enclosed equipment; to provide a degree of protection against falling dirt, rain, sleet, snow, wind-blown dust, splashing water, hose-directed water, and corrosion; and that will be undamaged by external formation of ice on the enclosure. NEMA 12: Enclosures constructed (without knockouts) for indoor use to provide a degree of protection to personnel against incidental contact with the enclosed equipment; to provide a degree of protection against falling dirt; against circulating dust, lint, fibers, and flyings; and against dripping and light splashing of liquids.
