In Memory of Ester Knight The Island Commons lost its most enduring and dedicated volunteer with the passing of Ester Knight on April 1. Ester was among the visionaries in the 1990s who conceived of the idea of an assisted living home to enable islanders to remain in the place they loved as they aged. Ester is credited with naming this brave venture: Island Commons. She believed that the Commons was to be a community-conceived, community-funded, and community-run service to Chebeague. From the day the first resident moved in until recently when she “retired,” Ester was a familiar face at the Commons, sharing her skills as a registered nurse, compassionate caregiver, good listener and tireless supporter. She will be deeply missed by all of us.
