GPS asset location and system information gathering Wachs Water Services has been retained by a client to GPS the assets of several utilities under its management. The success of the project highlights the importance of implementing a GPS programme, not only to determine asset location, but also as a method of gathering key system information.

International Trade Fair for Metallurgy, Machinery, Plant Technology and Products

The client sought the services of Wachs as a first phase in its efforts to have a centralised, up-to-date GIS database.

The International Tube and Pipe Trade Fair in Russia

The original database contained errors and inconsistencies. The Wachs team was responsible for collecting GPS locations for over 32,000 assets spanning three utilities. The client immediately integrated the findings into its GIS database, which was disseminated to its crews who, in turn, used the GIS in the field via tablet devices.

Wachs states that it was chosen due factors including its productivity, expertise and reputation.

Of the 32,000 assets visited by the Wachs Water Services team, nearly ten per cent had a deficiency, while 14 per cent could not be found or reached. Approximately 1,400 assets were discovered that utility management was not aware existed. In addition to delivering asset locations, Wachs provided helpful information, including items to be repaired, the locations of several main breaks, leaks, and other information of interest. After the completion of a Wachs Water Services GPS programme, utilities will be able to reduce system shut down time. “GPSing” system assets allows utilities to have an updated GIS, reducing the time required to shut down a system in the event of an emergency or for construction work.

Additional benefits of a GPS programme include the identification of necessary work orders, retrieval of up-to- date asset information, and identification of structural damage such as main breaks, large leaks and other system deficiencies.
