Downtown San Jose is a very walkable area, but if you don't want to walk, the light rail runs right through the city with several stops throughout the area. Rated the safest metropolitan city in the US, travelling by foot in the evening is generally very safe. The city of San Jose offers an array of public transportation options to assist with daily commutes. A comprehensive network of buses, trains, and various taxi services make commuting throughout the city and its neighborhoods an easy task. The San Jose Department of Transportation offers both local and regional commuting options. Trains The Caltrain rail services links San Jose and San Francisco, with stops at Gilroy, various Peninsula cities, and the San Francisco International Airport. GoPass annual transit passes provide unlimited, free rides on Caltrain. For locals desiring to commute to Stockton, the Altamont Corridor Express (ACE), links the city with San Jose, while the Capitol Corridor serves the San Jose and Sacramento areas. Buses The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) offers a vast bussing network connecting San Jose with dozens of other cities throughout the region. The VTA Trip planner tool will connect riders with bus ETAs, schedules, delays, and various updates. Commute Alternatives The Commuter Alternatives Program helps you find inexpensive, stress-free and environmentally-friendly ways to get to work.
