PEOPLE TO KNOW AT USD

A Message From President Hughes The men's basketball program is integral to the University's athletic endeavors, just as the athletic program is integral to our view of education - which is that education should develop the whole person. This program moved from NCAA Division II to Division I nine years ago, and each year has seen increasing strength and competitive capabilities in the USO team. The University is proud of the team's accomplishments, and pleased to support the program in every way possible, including scholarship aid to our athletes, recognition of the values of the program, and promotion of intercollegiate athletics. I believe our USO team will be receiving some national attention this year, and / look forward to watching the season's events unfold.

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT PERSONNEL

TOM IANNACONE, DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS The University of San Diego athletic department has a new Director. Tom Iannacone assumed the position September 1, 1988 after a nation-wide search for a successor to Rev. Patrick Cahill. The 47-year-old Iannacone comes to the University of San Diego with an im– pressive list of credentials and a thorough knowledge of intercollegiate athletics. He spent the past four years at St. Francis College in Loretto, Pennsylvania as the Director of Athletics. Hard work, loyalty and dedication are just some of the words that easily describe Iannacone. His major contributions at St. Francis included the expansion of sports offerings and scholarships for both men and women, improved budgets, renovation of athletic facilities, the hiring of additional staff, and the establishment of a master plan for the future and continual development of athletics. He served on several ECAC Metro Conference committees, most notably the committee on conference

development, which developed a plan for the future and implemented the position for a full-time commissioner. Prior to his tenure at St. Francis, Iannacone served as assistant athletic director at Fordham University from 1977-84. Along with his administrative duties at Fordham, he was an assistant football coach for the Rams. From 1975-78, he acted as offensive coordinator and backfield coach as Fordham captured 19 victories in their final 24 games during this span. The 1977 squad was and remains the highest scoring team in Fordham history, averaging 34 points per game. In 1983 Iannacone was presented the prestigious Jack Coffey Award by the Alumni Association for outstanding contributions to Fordham athletics. He has also served on various Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference committees. Prior to Fordham, Iannacone taught physical education and coached track and football in the Ridgefield, Norwalk and New Milford (CT) school districts from 1964-76. He made his collegiate football coaching debut as an offensive backfield coach at Western Connecticut State University in 1974. A 1964 graduate of the University of Connecticut, Iannacone received his master of science degree in physical education from Southern Connecticut State University in 1973. Tom and his wife, Cynthia, have three children: Tom Jr., Jennifer and Eric.

COACH HANK EGAN

HEAD COACH HANK EGAN Head Coach Hank Egan enters his fifth season at the helm of the USO basketball program. He has tallied an impressive four-year record at San Diego of 70-43, and a 46-11 mark in the USO Sports Center. Beginning his 18th season as a head coach at the NCAA Division I level, Hank car– ries an overall record of 218-228 into the 1988-89 campaign. Coach Egan found the 1987-88 season a challenging one as his thirteen-man roster-including seven freshmen-finished the season with an overall record of 11-17. In 1986-87 Coach Egan guided the Toreros to the first round of the NCAA Tournament. With a tough 62-61 loss to Auburn University in the tournament's first round, the USO men's basketball team completed its most successful season ever with a 24-6 record. Along the way USO won fourteen consecutive games and won the regular-season West Coast Athletic Conference championship with a 13-1 record. His peers from the WCAC voted him the 1986-87 Coach of the Year. In 1985-86 he guided the Toreros to a fine record of 19-9 and was named Co-Coach of the Year in the WCAC, sharing the honor with Pepperdine's Jim Har– rick (now at UCLA).

A recognized expert in the technical aspects of the game, Hank has an impeccable reputation for integrity, and is a coach who "gets the most" out of his players. Acknowledged as one of the finest defensive coaches in the nation, good defense is a trademark with Egan-coached teams. His 1986-87 team finished #1 in the nation in field goal percentage defense (40.1%) and in the top-ten in scoring defense (60.3). His 1985-86 team finished 8th in the nation in field goal percentage defense, limiting opponents to 42.4% shooting . Prior to USO, Hank coached at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs for eighteen years, thirteen as the head coach . Highlights of his coaching career include his 1986-87 club that finished 24-6 and participated in NCAA Tournament; his 1985-86 team that finished 19-9; and his 16-9 Air Force club from 1976. As evidence of the high regard in which he is held by his colleagues and basketball people in general , Hank was the alternate coach to George Raveling (USC) for the 1984 United States Olympic Basketball team; he was a coach in the Olympic tryouts in Bloomington, Indiana, and also scouted South American Olympic teams in San Paulo, Brazil; he is a member of the Legislative Commission of the National Basketball Coaches Association of America; and , was one of only ten coaches chosen in 1984 by the NCAA to participate and represent the country's coaches in a special meeting of Presidents, Athletic Directors, and Faculty Representatives called to study the strengthening of academic requirements for intercollegiate athletics. Before becoming the second head coach in Air Force basketball history, Egan was the freshman mentor for two seasons and was chief scout and recruiter during the 1970-71 season . From 1966 to 1968, he was an assistant junior varsity coach. A three-time basketball letterman at Navy, he also played several seasons on Air Force service teams and has coached on both the military and AAU levels. Hank graduated from the Naval Academy in 1960 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering. His hobbies include golf, jogging, reading and crossword puzzles. Hank and his wife Judy have two children, John and Kelly.

ASSISTANT COACHES

PAGES

ASSISTANT COACH MIKE LEGARZA Mike Legarza starts his fifth year as an assistant coach at the University of San Diego. In addition to being Coach Egan's top assistant, Mike is the recruiting coordinator and coaches the big men. Prior to USD Mike gained valuable coaching experience in 1974 under Boyd Grant of Fresno State as the Bulldogs went 25-10. During the 1982-83 season Mike was a graduate assistant at the University of Nevada-Reno under Sonny Allen.

A 1983 graduate of Nevada-Reno, Mike received his B.A. degree in Physical Education . Besides coaching, Mike played basketball at Nevada-Reno during the 1980-82 seasons. An All-State guard his second year at Menlo College in Atherton, California, Mike led the state in free throw shooting (.93%) and was the team's MVP. Mike prepped at Reno HS where he was All-State in both football and basketball. In the spring of 1987, Mike received his M.S. degree in Educational Counseling from the University of San Diego. Mike and his wife Kim reside in Del Mar.

ASSISTANT COACH RANDY BENNETT Randy Bennett begins his first year at USD as a full-time assistant coach to Hank Egan. In addition to his coaching duties, he will assist with scouting and recruiting . The past two basketball seasons (1986-88) Randy was a part-time assistant coach with the University of Idaho. Their '87-88 team finished 19-11 and second in the Big Sky Con– ference. The past two summers Randy directed Hank Egan's boys basketball camps. Prior to Idaho, he was a volunteer assistant at USD (1985-86) while finishing up his degree at UC San Diego. A 1986 graduate of UC San Diego, Randy received his B.S. degree in Animal Physiology. He played two years of basketball at UCSD (1983-85) and two years at Mesa Community College (1980-82) in Mesa, AZ under his dad, Tom Bennett. In his two years at Mesa, the team went 56-10 and made it to the nationals his freshman year. Randy, currently working on his M.A. in teaching , is single and resides in San Diego. ASSISTANT COACH GUS MAGEE Gus Magee began his USD coaching career as a graduate assistant to Bernie Bickerstaff, while pursuing his M. S. degree in Social Science. He then joined the USD basketball staff full-time in 1973. Magee also completed his undergraduate degree at USD and was a top basketball player here after completing his tour of duty with the U.S. Air Force. Gus played under legendary Coach Phil Woolpert and holds most of the Toreros rebounding records including 948 career rebounds, most rebounds in a single game (24), most rebounds in a season (344), and the single season rebound average (14.4 rpg).

Gus was the first USD alumnus to be inducted into the University of San Diego Basketball Hall of Fame. Coach Magee takes great pride in being involved with USD basketball since 1966 and in helping it to grow from a small college program to its current status as a member of the NCAA Division I ranks and the West Coast Athletic Conference. He is currently an Administrative Analyst with the San Diego Public Library System. Gus and his wife Faye have one son, Mark.

1988-89 OUTLOOK

1988-1989 UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO BASKETBALL OUTLOOK

The 1988-89 version of the University of San Diego basketball team, under the direction of fifth-year coach Hank Egan, will again feature primarily underclassmen. There are seven freshmen and five sophomores among the sixteen players listed on the roster. "This year we're just a young team and we'll have to fight our way through. We're going to have to spend a lot of time with fundamentals and learn to develop good work habits. We'll just keep our offensive and defensive strategies simple in the beginning and just worry about get– ting good. We've upgraded our schedule a little bit, and I think that will help us get better. We've got the makings of a pretty good ballclub sometime down the road," states head coach Hank Egan. Lost from last year's 11-17 team are senior forward Marty Munn, the team's leading scorer at 14.5 points per game; senior center Jim Pelton, who started at center in 21 games and averaged 6.7 points per game; junior Mike Haupt, who was the team's leading rebounder at 6.1 rebounds per game before he was lost for the season and his career with an injury to his right knee; and forward John Sayers, the 1987-88 West Coast Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year, who decided to transfer to Cal.

Senior Danny Means, last year's team MVP, is back for his fourth and final season . After averaging 12.1 points per game last year from the point position, Danny will move back to the shooting guard slot this year. "We return Danny to the off-guard position where he is most effective. A very mature individual, he should have his best year both as a player and leader," states Coach Egan. The leading candidate for the starting point guard position this season is Danny's younger brother Kelvin . A 6'0" sophomore, Kelvin started at point in the team's final seven games in '88 and averaged 6.4 points per game during that span. Senior Efrem Leonard finished third in scoring at 10.7 points per game and is back to add instant offense off the bench . Newcomers Gylan Dottin (6'5", Santa Ana, CA) and Wayman Stickland (6'2", San Francisco, CA) will both give Kelvin some competition for playing time at the point. Besides Danny Means, junior Craig Cottrell is the only other link from USD's 24-6 club from 1986-87. Cottrell , a 6'5" leaper, should see plenty of action this season at either forward or guard. Craig showed what he is capable of doing when he totaled 32 points and 15 rebounds in USD's back-to-back road games at Loyola and Pepperdine last season. Sophomores Keith Colvin (6'8", Chico, CA) and Randy Thompson (6'6", Chino, CA) will also compete for a starting forward spot with Cottrell. Looking to help USD with the rebounding chores will be newcomers Kelvin Woods (6'5", Pomona, CA), Alan Lewis (6'8", Fullerton, CA) and Carlos Carrillo (6'6", Southgate, CA). This trio of freshmen should get their share of minutes.

The starting center should be Dondi Bell, a 6'9" sophomore from San Diego, CA. Bell came on strong at the end of last season and scored 28 points in the team's final two regular-season con– tests. He also ranked 4th in shot block average (1.1) in the WCAC and shot 64.7% from the floor. Keith Colvin, besides playing at forward, will share time with Dondi at the post. John Jerome, a 6'8" transfer from Arizona State University, will redshirt the 1988-89 season and will have one year of eligibility for the Toreros - '89-90 season. Coach Egan and his staff will get their first glance at the young Toreros in action on November 7th when they host Athletes in Action. In preparation for the WCAC race, the Toreros will be tested early on by the likes of Lehigh (at the New Mexico Tournament), UC Santa Barbara, Cal State Fullerton, Montana, Utah and Western Kentucky during their non-

~

conference slate.

THE 1987-88 SAN DIEGO SEASON - A LOOK BACK

The University of San Diego Toreros, with seven freshmen on the twelve-man roster, surprised some teams in the West Coast Athletic Conference when they finished their nonconference slate with an 8-5 mark. Highlites from their eight vic– tories included solid wins over Montana (61-56) and Texas-Arlington (81-64) at home, and San Diego State (76-53) and Weber State (66-44) on the road . The Toreros opened the WCAC race with five straight losses, however, USD gave Santa Clara (54-56) and St. Mary's (40-41) battles during that span. USD recorded their first conference win at St. Mary's College (66-61) as senior forward Marty Munn scored 24 points. Unfortunately, in that same game, the Toreros suffered a major blow as they lost junior for– ward Mike Haupt for the season due to a career-ending knee injury. Without Haupt, USD's leading rebounder at 6.1 rpg , the Toreros lost their team leader and one of the few experienced players on the roster. From that point on the Toreros won just two of their remaining eight regular-season games. Their two wins came against Portland (61-41) and Pepperdine (76-74) . In their 76-74 upset win over the Waves, the Toreros got a team-high 21 points from Marty Munn. More importantly, the team broke out of a terrible 3-game shooting slump. In their regular-season final , USD surprised a lot of people by giving 18th-ranked LMU a run for their money. After the final buzzer had sounded , the Lions had prevailed 141-126. USD received career-highs from Munn (37 pts), Efrem Leonard (28 pts), Dondi Bell (18 pts) and Kelvin Means (14 pts) . After playing two very impressive games against Pepperdine and LMU, the Toreros ended the season on a disappointing note, losing their first-round WCAC playoff game to St. Mary's, 68-48. Junior guard Efrem Leonard was the only Torero to find his mark as he finished the game with 19 points. Freshman forward John Sayers was named the West Coast Athleti c Conference Freshman of the Year, and Marty Munn and Danny Means were selected honorable mention AII-WCAC.

"AMERICA'S FINEST CITY''

San Diego is truly " America's Finest City." A modern metropolis (second largest in California) and a popular year– round resort, San Diego spreads from the coast to the desert, including cliffs, mesas, hills, canyons and valleys. San Diego also surrounds one of California's greatest natural harbors which has been a dominant factor in determining the city's history, economy and development. As home of the largest naval air station on the west coast, the Federal government ranks first in economic impor– tance to the city with the aerospace equipment industry second . Tourism closely follows as third . Business and pleasure coexist in harmony in San Diego. The climate, attractive setting and recreational facilities make San Diego "America's Finest City." According to Sports Illustrated, "For sheer numbers of participants, diversity of pursuits of involvement, San Diego must rank as the sports and fitness capital of the U.S." Sports are a major feature of the San Diego lifestyle. One can sail , swim, surf, scuba dive, snorkel , wind-surf on 70 miles of public beach or golf at any of the over 50 golf courses throughout the county. Balboa Park, a 1,158-acre recreation and cultural center, offers 25 tennis courts, two gym– nasiums, two municipal golf courses and one of the nation 's finest zoos. Mission Bay Park is a 4,600-acre playground for jogging, fishing , bicycling, tennis, golf and kite flying. As well as participating in recreational activities, San Diego supports their professional teams - the Chargers in football , the Padres in baseball and the Sockers in soccer. Whatever sporting activity there is, it's here in San Diego - the sports capital of the U.S.A.

UNIVERSITY PROFILE The University of San Diego is an independent, Catholic university located on a 170-acre mesa overlooking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor, and the Pacific Ocean. The campus is named Alcala Park after the Spanish university town where St. Didacus (i.e., Diego) spent much of his time. Complementing its splendid natural setting is the University's location just 10 minutes from downtown San Diego - conveniently close to the major business, cultural, residential, and recreational areas, as well as the rail, bus and air terminals. Founded in 1949, USD is presently experiencing record attendance. Undergraduate enrollment stands at 3600, graduate students bring the overall campus enrollment to 5600. The University includes a College of Arts and Sciences, and Schools of Business Administration, Education, Nursing, and Law. Each is characterized by high academic standards, small classes, and excellent student-faculty relations. Though the majority of students come from the West Coast, every region of the United States is well-represented on campus. Students also attend USD from 24 foreign countries. In January of 1987, USD opened the doors to its new University Center, a 74,500 square foot building for students, faculty and staff. The two– level Center is the largest building on campus. It is the seventh major project completed at USD during the past nine years. It's a place for people to meet for leisure and fun, a place for extracurricular activities. Recreation, intramural and athletic activities are expanding rapidly. Among the many recreation and intramural programs offered, some of the favorites include: Mission Bay Aquatic Center activities (water skiing, surfing, sailing, crew), modern dance, aerobics, bowling, karate, backpacking, softball, tennis, floor hockey and volleyball.
