THE 1987-88 SAN DIEGO SEASON - A LOOK BACK

The University of San Diego Toreros, with seven freshmen on the twelve-man roster, surprised some teams in the West Coast Athletic Conference when they finished their nonconference slate with an 8-5 mark. Highlites from their eight vic– tories included solid wins over Montana (61-56) and Texas-Arlington (81-64) at home, and San Diego State (76-53) and Weber State (66-44) on the road . The Toreros opened the WCAC race with five straight losses, however, USD gave Santa Clara (54-56) and St. Mary's (40-41) battles during that span. USD recorded their first conference win at St. Mary's College (66-61) as senior forward Marty Munn scored 24 points. Unfortunately, in that same game, the Toreros suffered a major blow as they lost junior for– ward Mike Haupt for the season due to a career-ending knee injury. Without Haupt, USD's leading rebounder at 6.1 rpg , the Toreros lost their team leader and one of the few experienced players on the roster. From that point on the Toreros won just two of their remaining eight regular-season games. Their two wins came against Portland (61-41) and Pepperdine (76-74) . In their 76-74 upset win over the Waves, the Toreros got a team-high 21 points from Marty Munn. More importantly, the team broke out of a terrible 3-game shooting slump. In their regular-season final , USD surprised a lot of people by giving 18th-ranked LMU a run for their money. After the final buzzer had sounded , the Lions had prevailed 141-126. USD received career-highs from Munn (37 pts), Efrem Leonard (28 pts), Dondi Bell (18 pts) and Kelvin Means (14 pts) . After playing two very impressive games against Pepperdine and LMU, the Toreros ended the season on a disappointing note, losing their first-round WCAC playoff game to St. Mary's, 68-48. Junior guard Efrem Leonard was the only Torero to find his mark as he finished the game with 19 points. Freshman forward John Sayers was named the West Coast Athleti c Conference Freshman of the Year, and Marty Munn and Danny Means were selected honorable mention AII-WCAC.
