All the Men 1965

The final game of the tournament was won by Cal Poly of Pomona when they completely demolished the Toreros 75-47. The tourney loss was quickly forgotten , for the next Torero game was to pit the University team against cross-town rival and constant tormentor San Diego State College. That game started at 8:15 in Petersen Gym and just a little over two hours later, including two overtime periods, the Uni– versity of San Diego basketball team left Petersen Gym with an 89-85 victory. Thus the Toreros served notice to the city that they were now and would be in the future a power to be reckoned with. Smiles sang out the words "We won," and every Torero on the hill or in alumni circles stood just a bit taller, thought just a little bigger, felt just a little better . .. for now it was their turn to claim victory over a foe which had twice conquered them in the past. Somewhat fatigued from the previous night's game, the Tor– eros fell before Pepperdine 96-71 , but returned to stop three foes in a row including Cal Western, UC at Santa Barbara, and San Fernando State. It was at this point with a 14-7 record that everyone started looking forward to that fifteenth win .. . a new school record. With five games remaining, the probability of fifteen wins was conside red a sure thing, and talk turned to the possibility of 17 victories and possibly more. In their fi rst attempt at the magic number, the Toreros were stopped by Cal Poly of San Luis Obispo 92-84. This was followed by a loss to Cal Poly of Pomona, 50-47, which was in turn fol– lowed by a crushing and unexpected defeat by thrice-beaten Cal Western. With two games remaining chances for fifteen wins became an even bet. In bid four, Santa Clara tripped the Toreros 83-78 ... and one game remained. February 20 . . . USO Gym . .. vs. Chapman College. The scene was set, the team was ready, the fans were hopeful, almost desperately so, and the game began. Behind a well-balanced attack, including a 10 point effort by Matt Malerich the Toreros jumped off to a 33-21 half time lead. From this point, Lymond Williams with an 11 point second half and Alan Fay with nine led the way as the visiting team failed in an all out effort to foil the Toreros. They had waited long and they had waited patiently, but now the team had its fifteenth win .. . the first Torero squad to do so. And with the yelling and shouting over . .. came the recogni– tion to the men who had worked so hard to see this day come about. First to the Seniors who closed their careers the "best way" ... Lymond Williams, Mark Teissmann, Larry Moyer, and Ken Kullberg . . . they remembered their dismal sophomore year, an even season record their junior year, and now a 15-11 mark, a goal worked for, a reward earned. For the others-Ashford, Malerich, Yavorsky, Verlasky, Wo– jdowski, Fe rree, Bickerstaff, Fay, Price-there are still the sea– sons to come. Next year, and perhaps the following for some ... and always with the thought that last year it was fifteen , how many this year. How many?
