WITH FINNISH CRAFTSMANSHIP, USING THE FINEST NATURAL MATERIALS

When we founded Ruskovilla in 1981, we had a firm belief that people need authentic natural fibres for their skin, fibres that support the skin’s function and thus promote overall well-being. For a very young baby, warmth is of utmost importance, and here in the north, we understand the significance of warm clothing as protection against the cold. It was also clear to us that our production must take into account the well being of both people and the environment – from the selection of raw materials to the finished product, and from manufacturing to the use of leftover valuable materials. Over the years, we have always adhered to these principles. Operating in harmony with nature and valuing Finnish craftsmanship remain the foundation of everything we do. We know who designs, cuts, sews, and packs our clothes. It’s important to us that you, too, can trust that your clothes are made in good conditions, with respect for both people and the environment. That’s why our products are made from certified organic natural fibres in Finland – now and in the future, even as the lights go out in many factories around us. We don’t follow fast fashion trends but create functional, durable, and timeless clothing, with the focus on pure, natural fibres. Clothes that will accompany you in both everyday life and on adventures. Also our colour palette is inspired by nature: calm, harmonious shades you encounter when walking in the forest, on the fell, or along the shore. We have added three new nature-inspired shades to our wool fleece collection – Cloudberry, Cranberry, and Heather – to bring warmth and energy to everyday life. They are equally at home in the tranquillity of the woods and on city streets.

INSPIRED BY NATURE NEW COLOURS IN THE WOOL FLEECE COLLECTION

Wool fleece feels like a soft, warming hug. Cosy and versatile, it keeps you warm as a mid-layer in winter and works perfectly on its own throughout the rest of the year—whether on forest trails or city streets. Made of 100% organic merino wool, our fleece is free from microplastics. The new colours of the wool fleece collection draw their inspiration from the Finnish wilderness. Heather, delicate and muted; Cloudberry, glowing with vibrant orange energy; and Cranberry, a nuanced deep red, all evoke the tranquillity of the forest and moments in nature. A light sandy shade, Dune, also makes a welcome return.

FOR EVERYDAY AND ADVENTURE MERINO WOOL IS NATURE’S HIGH-TECH The ingenuity of merino wool lies in its ability to adapt to your needs: it breathes when you sweat, regulates body temperature, and keeps you warm even when damp. Wool rarely needs washing, as it doesn’t trap odours and freshens up by airing. Our 100% organic merino knit is smooth and fully covering, making the shirts ideal to wear on their own – for outdoor activities or everyday life.

OUTDOOR BASELAYER IS DESIGNED FOR CHALLENGING CONDITIONS

The natural technical properties of wool are second to none. The merino wool outdoor shirt and pants feature many useful details that have been tried and tested both in extreme conditions on polar ice caps and wilderness hikes. Wool is a naturally flame-resistant material, which is an added advantage especially when out in the wild. The baselayer is also very well suited for more laid-back hiking.

EMBRACE THE COLD ENJOY WINTER BY WEARING THE RIGHT LAYERS

Text and photos by Carina Rambausek, Nature Guide and founder of Wild Awake Outdoors

· 16 ·

Up here in Northern Finland winter can be very harsh and unpredictable. Temperatures may at times drop as low as -35°C. With the wrong clothing, this can quickly turn into a painful experience, leaving you cold, disappointed, and unable to enjoy winter at all. For those of us living in the North, this is not an option. We must stay well prepared throughout the six long months of winter if we don’t want to suffer. Luckily, there are ways to avoid freezing – and it all starts with the right base layers. In this article, we’ll explore why certain layers are indispensable for anyone venturing into the chilly Northern wilderness.

WHY CLOTHES ARE NOT JUST CLOTHES Through my work and life as a Nature Guide in Northern Finland, I see many different styles of winter dressing. Most of the time, the main problem is that people simply don’t know what a real winter feels like, and therefore lack understanding of what works and what doesn’t. The sensation of being in -20°C or colder is hard to imagine, and the instinctive reaction is: “I’m cold, so I’ll put on more clothes.” Well, yes and no. Adding layers isn’t wrong, but in a wintery environment it’s not just about how many layers you wear, but what kind of layers – especially when you’re active. And all of this starts with one crucial factor: the correct base layers. WHY BASE LAYERS MATTER THE MOST Base layers are the first layers – the ones closest to your skin after your underwear. Their primary purpose is to regulate body temperature and manage moisture by wicking sweat away from the body. When I lead snowshoeing or skiing tours in winter, I’m constantly alternating between moving and stopping. One moment I’m overheated, and the next I cool down quickly when taking a break. The problem here is sweat. As sweat evaporates from our skin, it takes heat with it. This cooling effect is welcome when you’re hot, but in winter it can make your body temperature drop dangerously fast. If your clothing doesn’t wick away moisture properly, it stays damp and conducts heat away from your body, making you feel even colder. The only way to

stay warm is to stay dry. Wet skin or damp clothing accelerates heat loss far more than dry fabric does. In short, we want moisture-wicking fabrics that minimise evaporative cooling. And for me, there is only one material that does this best: itch-free merino wool! WHY QUALITY MATTERS Wool is known for its incredible insulating properties. The unique structure of wool fibres traps air, creating a natural barrier that keeps your body warm even in the harshest conditions. Unlike synthetic materials, which can lose their insulating ability when wet, wool retains warmth even when damp. Wool also has natural antimicrobial properties that resist odours, meaning less smelly clothes and less washing. Merino wool, in particular, comes from certain breeds of sheep that produce superfine fibres – much finer than any other type of wool. Often when garments feel itchy, it’s because the fibres are coarse and ridged. The rule of thumb: the finer the micron, the softer the fibre, and the better it feels on your skin. That’s exactly what we want. Not only do I pay attention to the quality of my tours, but also to the clothing and equipment I use. I want things to last. And I want to be a role model, showing others that it’s possible to be responsible and to care for nature while enjoying the outdoors sustainably. I was lucky enough to discover a small family business here in Finland that shares these exact values: Ruskovilla – where high quality meets local production and sustainability. A rare find nowadays.

1.

THE PRODUCTS I USE THE MOST Even though I go through a long winter every year, no two winters are ever the same, and it always takes time to adapt to the cold season. What I do know, however, is what to wear and when. Of course, everyone experiences cold differently – depending on gender, body type and location. Here in Northern Finland, we have a dry cold, which is often less chilling than damp, humid cold. Since I’m very active in different winter activities, I want my clothing to be durable and thick enough to keep me snug even in challenging conditions. Here are my personal and honest recommendations, tried and tested in many situations. All I can say is: these products feel incredible. Well designed, extremely soft and durable. 1. MY ALL-TIME FAVOURITE: THE OUTDOOR SHIRT IN 100% ORGANIC MERINO WOOL I don’t only use this top layer when skiing, it doubles as a casual shirt once the weather gets colder. It looks

great, feels super soft and like a second skin, and I hardly want to take it off as it regulates my body temperature perfectly. I especially like the longer back that offers extra protection and keeps the shirt in place. The high collar is well designed, comfortable when zipped up and folded over, and the thumbholes are a great bonus. After months of heavy use, I can’t see any wear or pilling at all.

Tip: women may prefer one size smaller, as it’s a unisex model.

2. PAIR IT WITH: THE OUTDOOR PANTS IN 100% ORGANIC MERINO WOOL

To complete the base layer, bottoms are essential. Ruskovilla has created the most comfortable pair of (unisex) long johns I’ve ever worn. The pants are made in the same 210 g/m² knit as the Outdoor Shirt. I start using them when real winter sets in or on longer overnight tours, as they’re slightly thicker. What I love is the double layer at the knees that extends up to the

· 18 ·

waist, protecting areas that get cold easily. Thanks to this, I no longer need to wear a second pair of bottoms underneath. The adjustable waistband is another great feature.

when warm. They’re incredibly comfortable indoors and not too hot at all.

The adjustable waistband makes them fit perfectly. I also wear them for easy walks or in the garden in dry weather, though for more demanding conditions I’d switch to sturdier outer layers. LAST BUT NOT LEAST Whether you’re cross-country skiing, ice fishing, hiking, working, or simply relaxing at home, Ruskovilla’s wool layers are versatile and keep you dry, warm and comfortable. For me, investing in quality wool base layers made locally from responsibly sourced organic materials makes all the difference. So whether you’re heading for your next winter adventure or cosy by the fire after a day outdoors, you’ll be ready to embrace the cold!

My tip: choose a snug and comfortable size –these pants hardly stretch out over time.

3. A GAME CHANGER: MERINO SHORTS! My weakest spots in harsh conditions are the sides of my thighs and buttocks. Wind affects these areas, and since the body prioritises warming vital organs, blood flow there decreases. My solution – and a true game changer – has been merino shorts. The unisex shorts are also made of 100% organic merino wool (210 g/m² knit) and produced in Finland. They feel amazing on the skin, with zero itchiness. I wear them on their own in early winter, or under my base layer for extra warmth. They do loosen slightly with wear, so I recommend choosing a smaller size –unless you prefer wearing them over your base layer, in which case go bigger. 4. GOES ON TOP OF EVERYTHING: WOMEN’S WOOL FLEECE JACKET Not technically a base layer, but so versatile that it’s become a year-round favourite. In winter I wear it over my base layer; on milder days, simply over a shirt. The design is simple and timeless, so it works with I especially value the two-way zipper and practical zip pockets. Wool doesn’t need frequent washing, which makes this jacket even more appealing. I wouldn’t wear it for heavy activity though, as it’s not designed for hard use. 5. WEAR INDOORS OR OUTDOORS: WOMEN’S WOOL FLEECE PANTS At first, I wasn’t sure how much I’d use these, but they’ve become a staple. Warm and soft like the fleece jacket, they’re made from 100% organic merino wool, and once again you really feel wool’s natural temperature regulation: warming when cold, cooling jeans or my outdoor kit. With a knit weight of 300 g/m², it keeps me wonderfully warm.

By wearing Metsä products you can experience the benefits of Finnish nature on your skin all year round, wherever you are. CLOTHING TO SUPPORT IMMUNITY METSÄ PRODUCTS CONTAIN BENEFICIAL FOREST MICROBES

Spending time in nature has many beneficial effects on our health, such as lowering our heart rate, reducing stress levels and calming our minds. Scientific research has also proven that regular contact with nature’s rich biodiversity is essential for our immune system to develop and function correctly. IMMUNITY IS BUILT AT AN EARLY AGE Modern life and urbanisation affect our possibilities for a regular connection with nature. The absence of natural environments, and especially the lack of physical contact with nature’s rich biodiversity, brings about new immune system-related problems. Research has shown that the more microbial agents children are exposed to early in life, the less likely they

are to develop allergies and autoimmune diseases. Autoimmune diseases, such as allergies, asthma and type 1 diabetes, are among the world’s fastest-growing types of illnesses. Regular exposure to nature’s rich biodiversity helps maintain a healthy and normal immune system even in adulthood. BENEFITS OF NATURE ON YOUR SKIN Re-Connecting Nature™ extract is a patented Finnish innovation, developed by scientists at the Universities of Tampere and Helsinki. The extract contains a mix of safe, diverse and beneficial microbes, emulating the diversity of Finnish nature. It works through skin contact, enabling the microbes to stimulate and support the body’s immune system. We decided to add

Re-Connecting Nature™ forest extract to our underwear and accessories, and that is why we call them Metsä, the Finnish word for “Forest”. In autumn 2024, Uute Scientific published a study on a new supporting treatment for atopic dermatitis based on natural microbial exposure. The results show that the Re-Connecting Nature™ microbial extract increased nature exposure, strengthened the skin’s protective barrier, and prevented irritation in atopic skin, especially as autumn turned into winter. Skin barrier defect is the main problem in atopy, so this barrier strengthening effect is good news for atopic people. enabling extensive and long-term exposure to nature’s beneficial microbes – also in urban environments and in winter. Metsä products are made of certified organic silk wool, which is suitable for year-round use, even for sensitive skin and babies. A good idea is to wear Metsä clothing at night, so you get the benefits of nature on your skin conveniently while you sleep. Studies show that the extract remains in knitted silk wool fabric for multiple washes. For optimal benefits, use Metsä products as much as possible and clean them primarily by airing. PAMPER YOUR BABY WITH SILK

Suitably warm on cool summer days, nice and cool in warm weather – smooth silk is an excellent choice for babies as well. The textured surface of our popular sweet silk bonnet soothingly massages the baby’s head, the beautifully shaped front protects the forehead and the cap over the ears softens surrounding sounds. The organic silk bodysuit and pants feel comfortable on the baby’s delicate skin.

We manufacture products from three different types of natural fibres. When choosing the right size of silk wool clothing for adults especially, please remember that silk wool is more flexible than wool or silk. Our wool products’ knitted fabric will shrink a little in the first wash, which has been accounted for in the sizing, which will run a little loose before the first wash. None of our products need to be washed before use. 55 60 65 Chest circumference 54 57 60 64 68 72 76 Waist circumference 53 55 57 59 61 63 66 Hip circumference 58 60 64 68 72 76 80 Inside leg (crotch – floor) 35 41 47 53 59 65 70 Head circumference 50 51 52 53 54 55 55 Palm size from wrist to fingertips 12 12 14 14 16 16 16 Neck – wrist 39 43 47 51

TAKE CARE OF YOUR FAVOURITE CLOTHES AIR OFTEN – WASH INFREQUENTLY – PROTECT FROM MOTHS

Natural fibres are the most natural thing in the world. We use only the highest quality certified organic raw materials in our clothing and accessories: merino wool, silk and silk wool. Proper care ensures the longest possible useful life for the products.

FRESHEN BY AIRING Natural fibres, wool and silk in particular, have many self-cleaning properties. Airing is often all that is needed to freshen up the product and this allows longer washing intervals. After regular use, wool clothes should be washed, as washing helps the wool fibres recover and maintain their elasticity, thereby extending the useful life. Clothes should also be washed before being placed in storage for a longer period of time. FOLLOW THE WASHING INSTRUCTIONS Our wool and silk garments can be washed by hand or in a washing machine at 30°C with a hand or wool wash cycle. For wool fleece, we recommend a machine wash at 30°C with hand or wool wash cycle. After washing, the garment is shaped when wet and left to dry on a horizontal surface. We recommend the caring and ecological Sonett washing liquid for wool and silk, which contains olive oil and rapeseed oil. PROTECT AGAINST PESTS As our products are not treated with mothproofing chemicals, we recommend storing them in a tightly closed plastic bag when you are not using them daily or when you put the garments away in long-term storage. Red cedar rings and moth traps are a safe and organic way to protect natural fibres.

Sonett washing liquid for wool and silk 120 ml and 500 ml

Sonett wool conditioner 120 ml for wool fibres that are in heavy use, such as woollen nappy pants

Sonett gall soap bar 120 g liquid 120 ml

Red cedar rings 5 pcs

Glue trap for moths Also available: glue trap for Indianmeal and flour moths

EVERY PATCH COUNTS CIRCULAR ECONOMY IS PART OF OUR EVERYDAY WORK

Our sustainable clothing production is not about isolated actions or clever marketing tricks. It has been our way of life ever since Ruskovilla was founded in 1981. Every stage, from cultivating the raw material to its return to nature, is guided by the aim of people and nature living in harmony.

GENTLE ON NATURE, GOOD FOR YOU Working for the good of people and nature is at the core of our operations. We believe that underwear, being in direct contact with the skin, plays a major role in people’s well-being. Our products are made responsibly from certified organic natural fibres, with respect for both nature and people, from the fibre to the very last stitch. NO HURRY RESULTS IN LESS WASTE Ruskovilla’s products are designed and manufactured in Artjärvi, Finland, in a former dairy building dating back to 1927. As all our employees are on a monthly salary and work in-house, there is time to plan each stage of production carefully. When cutting materials, patterns are placed in such a way that as little valuable raw material as possible goes to waste. Smaller pieces are used, for example, to make baby mittens or patch material for repairing clothes. The same precision and waste minimisation are applied at every stage. NEW LIFE FOR PATCHES Some small offcuts inevitably remain during the cutting phase of garment production. None of these are dis carded: they are sent to Dafecor in Turenki, where they are shredded and carded into wadding. Wadding made from white wool and silk wool offcuts is delivered to Laatupeite in Tampere, where our wool-filled bedding is produced. Dafecor also manufactures parquet underlay felt, for example, from coloured offcuts.

FOR ARTS AND CRAFTS Our high-quality raw materials are also sought after by artisans. Edge strips of wool fleece knit are popular for making rag rugs. Wool wadding and fleece strips are suitable for various crafts, while silk offcuts are carded and spun together with Finnsheep wool into knitting yarns at Pirtin Kehräämö spinning mill, which also produces our soft flocky yarn. The sock mending yarn is Pirkka yarn by Taito Pirkanmaa. MEND TO EXTEND THE LIFE CYCLE Proper washing and storage are essential for ensuring a long life for garments. As time goes by and wear appears, it’s time to mend the garment. The best time to mend is when the knit begins to thin but before holes form. To make this easier, our product range includes fabric patches made by the Finnish company FabPatch Oy from our organic silk wool. These elastic patches allow you to mend wool and silk wool garments quickly without a needle and thread. Oval-shaped wool fleece patches are ideal for reinforcing elbows or knees on fleece products. Our handy mending thread kit includes a needle and makes it easy to repair small holes in wool or silk wool garments – even on the go. Patches and mending thread are available at our online store.
