Who Buys a Habitat Home?

Our homebuyers have steady incomes and are

Kids living in a home their parents own are 116% more likely to graduate and 185% more likely to join clubs and groups in school. The average mortgage payment for our homebuyers is less than their rent, leaving more discretionary income for education, medicine and other needs. The housing shortage hits lower income families harder.

ready to reap the rewards of home ownership, like

stability. They are hard working and willing to put time and effort into building their own home. They become part of the Habitat family and join the cycle of giving back by helping the next family. Recently, a

family settled into their home and then became an emergency foster family for children in immediate need. Our buyer said “I didn’t know there were so many people still out there with so much love that they had enough to share with me and my family, complete strangers. And you know what? Now we do too”. Who

income qualifies? Teachers, Virginia Tech employees, mail carriers, bus drivers, retail managers, and even small business owners.

“I didn’t know their were so many people still out there with so much love they had enough to share with me and my family, complete strangers. And you know what? Now we do too”.

Every family deserves an affordable place to call home.

“Volunteering at Habitat for Humanity is such an honor – it aligns with my beliefs and values that I am here to serve others! It is

also a great opportunity for 1901 Group to serve

our community as a team outside of our workplace. I look forward to the

upcoming volunteer opportunities to give my time to help those in need of a helping hand.” - R. Wilson, 1901 Group

Habitat Partners with Floyd Initiative for Safe Housing Habitat for Humanity has partnered with the Floyd Initiative for Safe Housing (FISH), a group of Floyd volunteers that include

citizens, elected officials and municipal staff. This group came together to improve the stock of existing and availability of new affordable housing in Floyd County. Since 2017, with the guidance of HFHNRV, FISH has assisted dozens of families with home repairs. The criteria for the work focuses on making the home safer, warmer and dryer. FISH has raised funds for the material themselves from concerned citizens, performed the work with all volunteer teams

and organized several community meetings to better understand the needs. “This is a great model of cooperation between HFHNRV and a municipality that we would like to duplicate throughout the NRV.”

Who is Habitat? Our Habitat for Humanity of the New River Valley employs over 25 people in this community. Take a minute to get to know one of the special people who work here. Meet Dan Crowder. Dan hired on in April of 2018 as a site supervisor and sustainability manager. His goal is to reduce job site waste by 40%, through innovative recycling and

advanced framing techniques. This will save money and the planet as less material is destined for a landfill. Dan was born in Blacksburg and raised in Christiansburg. He is also a volunteer with the Blacksburg rescue squad, specializing in cave rescue. He was recently featured on national news after being a part of the Cyclops K rescue team that pulled five people out of a cave in Russell County, Virginia. Dan is also instrumental in the development and management of the Repair Café and Tool Lending Library. Just two innovative ways we help the community connect and grow.

Repair Café Twice a year we

assistance, furniture repair, tool and knife sharpening and sewing. The Master Gardeners offer gardening tips and advice, as well. Our next Repair Café will be on Saturday, October 26.

Our first Tool Lending Library, Saturday, October 26. The tool lending library provides access to tools that might otherwise be very expensive and only used once. Some of the most popular rental requests have been ladders, extension cords and garden tillers . We will also offer classes that teach repair tricks, DIY projects, or learn a new skill, such as canning.

Who are Habitat donors? Donations fuel the services and programs we provide. Donors come in all shapes and sizes, just like their donations. We built a ramp for a homebound woman and she made a donation of $10. We appreciated it. Other donations are significantly larger and we appreciate those too. Some donations come in the form of a sofa or gently-used refrigerator or a car given to the
