USO HAD SIX DRAFTED IN 2006 MLB DRAFT

The University of San Diego baseball team had four players selected on the first day of the 2006 Major League Baseball draft. Junior right-handed pitcher Josh Butler was selected in the second round as the 47th overall selection by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, junior left-hander Nate Boman was taken in the ninth round as the 282nd overall selection by the Los Angeles Angles of Anaheim , junior shortstop Steve Singleton was take in the 11th round as the 336th overall selection by the Minnesota Twins and Keoni Ruth was taken in the 17th round as the 509th overall selection by the Chicago Cubs. Junior catcher Jordan Abru– zzo and junior right-handed pitcher Anthony Slama were both taken in the second day of the draft. Abruzzo was a 39th round pick of the Boston Red Sox and Slama was also selected

in the 39th round as the Minnesota Twins selected him. Butler finished his most productive season in a Torero uniform in 2006 as he J posted a 3.06 ERA and a record of 8-5. Butler began the season with a bang as he ~~~– shutdown the hot bats of the defending national champion Texas Longhorns in the '//i season opening win against Texas. Butler threw five complete innings not allowing a single run while giving up only two hits and striking out five batters in picking up the win for the Toreros. Butler would feed on that hot start and not allow a run , earned or unearned , to cross the plate for his first 27 innings of work in the season to earn the West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Month for February. Butler would also pick up two WCC Pitcher of the Week honors throughout the season while serving as the Toreros Saturday starter. Boman , who sat out this past season with a medical redshirt, had a solid sopho– more season in which he posted 3-1 record with an ERA of 2.21 in 22 appearances before going down with a season-ending injury. Singleton also had his most productive season as a Torero in 2006 posting career– highs in batting average at .363, hits with 89 , doubles with 17, triples with two, home runs with five and RBI with 41 . Singleton led the team in batting with his batting average and hits, was second on the team in doubles and was tied for second on the team in home runs with five . Singleton was one of two Toreros to be named first– team AII-WCC. Ruth was one of the Toreros best offensive and defensive payers in the 2006 season as he too posted career highs in batting average at .358, hits with 82 and RBI with 34 . Ruth was the team-leader in stolen bases with 18 and was second on the team in hitting with his .358 average. Ruth hit a blistering .489 in conference play en route to being named first-team AII-WCC . Abruzzo, a 2006 All-West Coast Conference second-team honoree, finished his junior campaign with a batting average of .314, had 75 hits, a team-leading 18 doubles, eight home runs and 58 RBI. Abruzzo finished the season in stylish fashion as in the Toreros second game in the Fullerton NCAA Regional he set new program records in single-game home runs hit with three and single-game RBI with eight. Abruzzo was named to the Fullerton Regional All-Tournament team after his outstanding performances in USD's three games at the Fullerton Regional. Slama finished his first season in a Torero uniform with a record of 2-0 and an ERA of 6.18 while making 25 appearances and two starts. Slama served USO as a mainstay in the bull pen as a closer and recorded 37 strikeouts.
