What important points are presented in the ARC Guideline related to oxygen resuscitation? ARC Guideline 10.4 (Use of Oxygen in Emergencies) states: • Basic Life Support measures should never be delayed whilst waiting for oxygen or other equipment. • The use of oxygen may be beneficial in emergencies with breathing and non-breathing victims. • There is evidence to support the use of oxygen as part of first aid management of decompression illness. [RTO Note: in divers who used compressed gas] • A victim who requires supplemental oxygen in a first aid setting requires further evaluation so an ambulance must always be called. NOTE: ARC Guideline 7 (AED Use in Basic Life Support) states “ In the presence of oxygen, there are no case reports of fires caused by sparking when shocks were delivered using adhesive pads.”
