EcoCampus is good for the students and institutions because it: • Encourages collaboration between university management, academic staff and students. • Develops research skills by undertaking an environmental review, creating an action plan, monitor and evaluate progress and reporting. • Develops transferable workplace skills such as communication, writing, community service and teamwork. • Opportunities for learning exchanges nationally and international twinning • Holistic reduction of campus environmental impact. • Resource and financial savings. • Encourages transformation and innovation. • Improves learning outcomes. • Empowers students and staff. • Provides good publicity locally and internationally. • Campus becomes a better neighbour and lead by example in surrounding community.
FEE EcoCampus is an international award programme that guide institutions of higher learning on their journey to sustainability. Using a structured seven-step framework, campus communities work together to transform their institution and enhance their curriculum. The programme can be successfully used for all higher education institutions in South Africa, including private and public Universities, TVET Colleges and Community Colleges. WESSA is the FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education) appointed national operator in South Africa. The EcoCampus programme awards an International Green Flag to campuses implementing long-term environmental initiatives by: • Aplying all the Seven Steps. • Registered for at least 1.5 academic year. • Paid registration fee for the registration period. • Submitting annual progress reports and full reassessment every 3 years.
