School district: Spoon River Valley CUSD #4 One thing you would like people to know about your school district: Our student test scores rank among the highest in our region. Years as educator: 31 High School: MacArthur High School Decatur, Class of 1976 Colleges or Universities: Millikin University, Western Illinois University, University of Illinois - Springfield, Illinois State University. Family: Wife Denise and two children, Brandon (27) and Rachel (23). One grandson Levi (5 months) Favorite hobby: Reading, domestic travel, Cardinal spring training

One thing people probably would be surprised to know about you: I have a master’s degree in Microbiology.

Biggest concern about public education: Unfunded mandates take up WAY too much of our time as educators. Let us simply teach! Most encouraging thing about public education: Some of the young teachers coming into the profession show great promise.

Favorite movie: Star Wars Favorite book: 1776 by David McCullough Favorite musical artist: OneRepublic (Ryan Tedder lead singer) One thing people probably would be surprised to know about you: I was a Governor’s Intern for Governor James R. Thompson in 1990. Biggest concern about public education: Fair and equitable funding for elementary and secondary education. Small rural schools have to provide the same quality education as property rich suburban schools do with far less funding per pupil. Most encouraging thing about public education: Despite the challenges I firmly believe public schools in Illinois are doing the best job we have ever done…delivering high quality, data driven, student-centered instruction.
