From the Editor… As we enter into the month of February, all can see that we are defiantly getting into the heart of winter. We have all learned a new Weather Term from our weatherman – ‘Polar Vortex’, or as I like too call it…Bi-Polar Vortex, as Mother- nature can’t make up her mind if she wants to hit us with subarctic temperatures or multiple inches of snow from week- to-week. We know one thing? It’s been one hard winter so far. I want to thank our New Commodore, John Anderson and his wife Beverly for kicking off the year with such a ‘beautiful and wonderful’ Commodores Ball…what a great party they through, Thank You! Please see the fabulous pictures taken by member Bill Eden in the back of the Beacon…he really captured the nights moments! Please look inside for highlights on upcoming events such as, ABYA Midland Trip, Rendezvous', Tiger Game Night, and Spring Fashion Show.

Thank you for reading!

Wishing you all the best,

Brent Malik Director, Publications

“If there’s no Wind…Row”

What a great start to the year! The Commodore’s Ball seemed to be a success by the reviews of folks attending it. That satisfies me because my whole determination in putting on this affair was to have our members and guests enjoy themselves having a good time all the while. Much thanks and gratitude has to be sent out to everyone involved. It takes many hands to have something like this a success and believe me, many hands were there making sure that all was perfect. My deep appreciation goes to Kim Miedema for all that she did in capturing this special night with her camera. This went far beyond the duties of Club Photographer, a position that she accepted for this year. Thank you, Kim! I hope you saved some time for yourself to enjoy the festivities.

Our member from the Buckeye state, Bill Edens also did a fine job of capturing precious moments for me. Without these folks … I don’t know … it was all a whirlwind of an evening and I’m sure I wouldn’t have remembered a fraction of the fun that we had. The Salty Dogs had a special treat for me. It was their rendition of the Marine Corps Anthem. Thank you, fellas! Speaking of things Special … great big congratulations goes out to two couples that have done so much for the good of our Club. NCYC Spirit Award winners Greg and Yvonne Murray and NCYC Member of the Year Award winners P/C Harley and Linda Burris. None else are more deserving to win these awards for this past year. Thanks to all of you for what you have done for us … and thank you P/C Don Vanover for recognizing the value of these fine members. As we go along this year, you may realize little changes in things. I’m going to be trying to improve the way we do things in little ways. If they work … fine, we’ll continue. If not, well then nothing lost. For instance, in order to improve communication to the membership I’ve asked that we put a Fan-Out shortly after our Board of Directors meetings highlighting anything that we’ve discussed and have come to a decision, in acting on it. It will give you, the membership, a fast-track on what’s happening instead of relying of hearsay at best or a month or two delay until these items get published. A couple highlights of the January board meeting were the discontinuance of the printed Beacon. The monthly Beacon was more of a nuisance than anything else with a little more than a half-dozen members subscribing to it. It was becoming too costly to continue it’s publishing and the little interest in it couldn’t justify the effort. Of course, the printed Roster will continue to be offered and multiple copies can be ordered with your request. In order to continue to bolster our membership of the Club we decided to continue a reduction in initiation fees until May 1 st . The fee is set at $750 until the May deadline at which time we will revisit this issue and determine it’s effectiveness.

Another item to be continued is the ‘dues split-payment program’. We felt that since so many things are coming due at this time of the year, it may make things a bit easier for our members to spread out their dues payment for a couple of months. If you intend to take advantage of this program, please contact our Membership Director Brian Malik for details. It seems that the Polar Express is still with us unless a whole lot changes by the time this article gets published. I’m hoping that the Shanty Creek Expedition went well. They should have had all the snow needed for their activities. Make sure that you put this on your ‘To-do’ list for next year! NCYC Bowling is still in full-swing. If you’re not bowling then c’mon up and cheer your favorite team on! Last…and Not Least, is the ABYA Spring Rendezvous in Midland. Tickets are still on sale and this is one event that you are Guaranteed to have a good time. Come out and support ABYA. Come out and SUPPORT this year’s Rear Commodore of ABYA, our P/C Rick and Jill Romatz. PARTY’S ON !!! That about does it for now. Be safe out there and enjoy the day. Keep in mind our members that aren’t doing so well. Give them a call or send‘em a card. It only takes a few minutes, but it means so much to these friends of ours. Comments or suggestions?..... give me a call!

Let The Good Times Roll, John Anderson Commodore 2014

What a great way to start out the year for NCYC. I am referring to the Commodore’s Ball honoring John and his lady Beverly. Congratulations to both of you and thank you for all your preparation and hard work, everyone had a great time. Way to go Greg & Yvonne Murray and P/C Harley & Linda Burris on your Spirit and Member of the year awards respectively. February is the month the Board approves committees and begins to firm up plans for the upcoming season. Consider stepping up and helping on a committee or assisting with an event this year. It is a great way to meet new members and is truly a ton of fun.

It is not too early to start thinking about the 2014 work schedule. All members need to send their top three choices for a work weekend to our Secretary Randy Pagel, so that he can complete the schedule. If you are interested in stepping up to be a weekend OD, please let Randy know, and if you are interested in managing for a week, contact P/C Harley Burris. If you're thinking about either being an OD or week manager but you're still on the fence, consider teaming with another couple. It's a great experience and a lot of fun. NCYC has a couple of winter events coming up. Both are a great opportunity to get together and enjoy great company. First is the 4th Annual NCYC Ski/Snowmobile weekend at Shanty Creek. It should be a great time! Next is the ABYA “Derby Downs” Spring Rendezvous in Midland. This weekend always promises to be a lot of fun. I'm sure this year will be no exception. Watch your fan outs and the Beacon for details on both of these great events. Leading up to each major event this year and immediately following the event Renee and I are taking notes to be prepared for next year. With that said, save the date for next year’s Commodore’s Ball celebrating our clubs 50th anniversary – January 24 th , 2015.

V/C Brian McEvoy

No need to tell those that attended the 2014 Commodore’s Ball what a GREAT time it was. However, for those that unfortunately missed the ball, you missed a real gala event with great NCYC tradition, great camaraderie and loads of fun. Thank you to Commodore John and his wife Bev, as well as to the long list of volunteers that help that made the event possible. It was amazing to personally witness the looks on the faces of the Member of the Year, Harley and Linda Burris, and the Spirit Award recipients, Greg and Yvonne Murray. As with all of us in the NCYC membership, we do not do the things we do to support NCYC for personal attention, we do it for the love of the club and our extended family.

However, Harley and Linda are a hard team to compete with and deserved that honor. Greg and Yvonne took on Fleet for a second time and gave us more rendezvous’ with more boat participants that I have seen for several years. Their spirit created great success, thank you! Winter still has what seems to be a stranglehold on us here in Michigan. However, everyday brings us one day closer to spring and the Elite Brigades, and work (fun) parties. The good news is that many of the think-tank organizations agree that with the tough winter deeper water will be an outcome. Let’s not forget that at the core of NCYC is our volunteerism, sweat equity, and hard working membership. So mark your calendars with the dates for the 2014 activities and events. We still have opportunities for you to help the club by being a week manager, weekend OD, and putting on events throughout the year. Your Board of Directors has started the work of managing the club and stands ready to make the important decisions such as member dockage, guest dockage, and membership levels that will move us into the future.

I continue looking forward to the countdown to the 2014 opening launch date (65 days from the writing of this article, if the ice melts in time), hot sun, deep water and the sound of the bell.

AMessage From Chaplain Art Brooks…

During the last month, several of our NCYC member friends have lost loved ones and others have been hospitalized.

P/C Commodore Tom McHugh’s father, Thomas J. McHugh, age 81, passed away on December 21 st at his home in Gaylord. A memorial service was held on January 4 th at St Mary’s Church with several NCYC members in attendance. Mark and JoAnn Rathbone both lost a parent just days apart. Clarence Dockeray, father of JoAnn, passed away on January 3 rd , and Felicite Marie Rathbone-Pominville, Mark’s mother, died on January 7 th . Their funerals were held from the Wujek-Calcaterra Funeral Home in Shelby Township.

The Siwek family lost John Siwek, brother of P/C Henry, on New Years Eve.

Cindy Swan had knee surgery on January 9 th . She is at home going through rehab and out patient therapy. She should be up and around very soon.

Diane French’s brother, Fred Jasmund, suffered a stroke while in sunny Florida. He will be recuperating and having his therapy there. If you wish to send him a card, his address is 5725 Cottonwood St., Bradenton, FL 34203.

We are so sorry for your losses, illnesses and discomfort. Hearing from the membership is very consoling during these difficult times.

note from Diane…

“To ALL my friends at NCYC, A mere "Thank You" is not enough for all the well wishes, cards and prayers for my brother Fred after his stroke Dec. 27. I believe his recovery is because of all the prayers from all of you. After only a month of therapy he is already doing much better. By the time you see him this summer you probably won't even know what happened. Thank you for being there for us. THANK-YOU !!! THANK-YOU !!! THANK-YOU !!!”

Warmest Regards, Diane French and Fred Jasmund

Taking the words below to heart may also help those in need:

“May the love of God give you peace, May the love of friends give you comfort,

May the love of your dear one remain in your heart, And give you strength through the difficult days ahead.” Amen

DON’T FORGET YOUR SPECIAL VALENTINE FEBRUARY 14 TH !!!!

Swearing in of officers: Commodore John thanked Art for being here tonight and for all that he does for the club. Chaplain Art Brooks did the official swearing in of the officers. He indicated that a ceremonial swearing in will be conducted at the Commodore Ball.

Commodore’s Comments:

Commodore, John Anderson

I would like to welcome everyone and thank you for your attendance to our first meeting of the 2014 season. I would like to give a big nod of appreciation to our PC Don Vanover for his efforts last year in positioning our Club in a very good direction. I'm looking forward to working with all of you. We have a very talented group of people here and in setting our minds to it, we can move our Club forward in a positive way.

My Commitment to all of you is to put forward the very best job as I can. The decisions that I make will be with the entire Membership in mind.

My expectations are that you, my fellow officers, will give your best to the Membership that has put their trust in you. Though in meetings we may be diverse in our ideas or opinions, when we finally come to a vote on an issue, we leave that meeting solid in our decision.

My goal for this year is to place the Club in a better position both financially and socially than we received it. We need to build on our successes and move forward to the future.

I have no doubt that all of this can be achieved with open minds and determination we will succeed.

Vice-Commodore’s Comments:

Vice Commodore, Brian McEvoy

I hope everyone had a good Christmas and New Year's.

Congratulations to Don Vanover for earning the title of Past Commodore.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the newly elected Directors, Frank Corcoran, Randy Pagel, Brian Malik and Brent Malik for offering their time and services on behalf of the membership. I would also like to thank the outgoing Directors, Diane French, Greg Brigman and Kim Miedema for their contributions to the Club this past year.

I'm looking forward to working with this Flag and group of Directors for the next 12 months.

Rear-Commodore’s Comments: Rear Commodore, Chuck Stroh Thanks PC Don Vanover for a great year last year. You did a great job and we had a lot of fun. To all the new members, be active in the meetings and state your views. There will be some tough

NCYC Regular Meeting Minutes Page 3 of 7

decisions and interesting conversation. In the end, we will all shake hands and go in the common direction.

Financial Report:

Treasurer, Frank Corcoran

RC Chuck Stroh and I have spent many hours going over the budget. I emailed the reports to the directors and ask that you review them and let me know of any concerns. Not much happens in December. We had some dredging and Fin work. Any questions please contact me or bring it up at a Board Meeting. VC Brian stated that there was some question about the bar sales reports. RC Chuck Stroh informed everyone that they changed the reporting method last year, and some things are in different categories of the report.

Motion: Moved by PC Hugh Vestal to approve the financial report. Seconded by Rich Goodman.

Motion Carried

ABYA Report: P/C Don Vanover The January 6, 2014 meeting was held at Huron Pointe. There were not many members there due to the inclement weather. The Spring Dinner Dance is being held at the North Channel Yacht Club on May 31, 2014. If interested in tickets, contact PC Don Vanover. The Midland event will be held March 7 thru March 9, 2014. This is always a good time. There will be a lot of activities and an open bar. The ABYA safety book went to the printer and should be done by the Boat Show.

Correspondence:

A thank you note was received from Art and Sue Brooks for the memorial to St Jude Children's Hospital for Sue's Mother.

Member Terry Schimke wanted some information on advertising in the Beacon.

A letter from Bob Mann stating that he was on leave of absence and would like to return to the Club. He included his check for his dues.

A letter was received by Tom McInnes requesting a leave of absence from the Club.

Motion: Moved by RC Chuck Stroh to approve Tom's request pending confirmation of hours worked. Seconded by PC Hugh Vestal. Motion Carried

Commodore John read a note from PC Tom McHugh thanking membership for their thoughts and prayers during the recent loss of his father.

I. CURRENT BUSINESS

Activities - Bob Carnaghi There are still a few weekends left to fill. Great Lakes Cruising Club would like to have a rendezvous at North Channel Yacht Club on a weekend. The request came through Yvonne Murray. They came last year for a rendezvous. They would have a dinner, that all of North Channel would be invited (for a charge) and they also provide entertainment. Bob will contact Yvonne with some dates that are available. Tabled until the February meeting. Anyone interested in sponsoring an event, please contact Bob or Commodore John.

Club House - Rich Goodman The Club House is peacefully awaiting our return. No report

Harbor & Grounds – Don Reiss No Report

Membership - Brian Malik The letters went out and the checks are starting to come in. A lot of calls and emails wanting to know if we are still doing the split dues. This topic will be discussed in the New Business section of the meeting. Publications - Brent Malik Brent was absent-excused. PC Don Vanover stated what an excellent job Brent did in getting out the January Beacon. Secretary – Randy Pagel The work schedule is still a work in progress. We still need an OD for the weekend of August 1, 2014. I wanted to thank Brent for putting the Boat US discount in the Beacon. The reciprocal cards are almost done for the other boat clubs. Should be done in the next week or two.

Supplies – Hugh Vestal The liquor is locked up tight! No report
