The Gearhart Hotel...A Memory Locked Inside A Melody...

MEMORIES INTO MELODIES

the Ocean House-d.b. and Meta Schroeder

My grandparents arrived in Gearhart in 1908 after a short stay in New York. They built the Ocean House at the corner of South Ocean Avenue and Pacific Way in 1927 after their Golf Hotel burned in 1923. They were beloved neighbors to their Gearhart friends. Meta was long remembered for her Clam Chowder and was said to have a knack for bathtub gin. Many of the independent people of Gearhart saw Prohibition as an infringement on their personal lives and would post small pennant flags in front of their houses to let friends know they were observing "Cocktail Hour". Much of their joy flowed from a bathtub up the street. Richard T. Schroeder
