PEOPLE TO KNOW AT USD

A Message From President Hughes The men's basketball program is integral to the University's athletic endeavors, just as the athletic program is integral to our view of education - which is that education should develop the whole person. This program moved from NCAA Division II to Division I in 1979, and each year has seen increasing strength and competitive cap– abilities in the USO team. The Univefsity is proud of the team's accomplishments, and pleased to support the program in every way possible, including scholarship aid to our athletes, recognition of the values of the program, and promotion of intercollegiate athletics. I believe our USO team will be receiving some national attention this year, and I look forward to watching the season's events unfold.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

TOMIANNACONE Director of Athletics

Tom Iannacone begins his third year as the University of San Diego director of athletics. He assumed the position September 1, 1988 after a nationwide search. The 49-year-old Iannacone has made great strides in his first two years. His accomplishments at USO include an on– going internal reorganization of the athletic department, plus improvements in the major areas of new personnel, additional scholarship assistance, facilities improvements, promotions and marketing, fund raising, drug education and academic support. Iannacone came to the University of San Diego with an im– pressive list of credentials and a thorough knowledge of in– tercollegiate athletics. Prior to USO, he was Director of Athletics for four years at St. Francis College in Loretto, Pennsylvania. Hard work, loyalty and dedication are just some of the words

that easily describe Iannacone. His major contributions at St. Francis included the expansion of sports offerings and scholarships for both men and women, improved budgets, renovation of athletic facilities, the hiring of additional staff, and the establishment of a master plan for the future and continual develop– ment of athletics. He served on several ECAC Metro Conference committees, most notably the committee on conference development, which developed a plan for the future and implemented the position for a full-time commissioner. Prior to his tenure at St. Francis, Iannacone served as assistant athletic director at Fordham University from 1977-84. Along with his administrative duties at Fordham, he was an assistant football coach for the Rams. From 1975-78, he acted as offensive coordinator and backfield coach as Fordham captured

19 victories in their final 24 games during this span. The 1977 squad was and remains the highest scoring team in Fordham history, averaging 34 points per game. In 1983, Iannacone was presented the prestigious Jack Coffey Award by the Alumni Association for outstanding contributions to Fordham athletics. He has also served on various Metro Atlantic Conference committees. Prior to Fordham, Iannacone taught physical education and coached track and football in the Ridgefield, Norwalk and New Milford (CT) school districts from 1964-76. He made his col– legiate football coaching debut as an offensive backfield coach at Western Connecticut State University in 1974. A 1964 graduate of the University of Connecticut, Iannacone received his master of science degree in physical education from Southern Connecticut State University in 1973. Tom and his wife, Cynthia, have three children: Tom Jr. and Jennifer, both students at USO, and Eric, a Poway High School senior.

COACH HANK EGAN

SAN DIEGO HEAD COACH HANK EGAN

Head Coach Hank Egan begins his seventh season with the USO Toreros and twentieth as a Division I head coach . This past season he successfully molded his squad into a 16-12 team that finished 3rd in the competitive West Coast Con– ference. He has tallied an impressive six-year record at San Diego of 94-75, as well as a 61-24 mark in the USO Sports Center. His .556 overall winning percentage at USO is tops among the nine different coaches that have been at the helm of the USO basketball program. Entering his twentieth year, Coach Egan takes a career mark of 242-260 into the 1990-91 campaign . Sandwiched between this past season's mark of 16-12 and the 1986-87 squad that went 24-6 and won the WCC regular-season crown, the Toreros struggled with young teams that went 11-17 ('87-88) and 8-20 ('88-89). With twelve upper– classmen slated for this season's roster, it looks promising for the Toreros to field another competitive and successful team. At the NCAA's in 1986-87, the team suffered a tough 62-61 loss to Auburn University in the tournament's first round; however, the USO men's basketball team completed its most successful season ever. Along the way, USO won fourteen consecutive games, won the regular– season West Coast Conference championship with a 13-1 record and finished with a school record 24 victories. Coach Egan's peers from the WCC voted him the 1986-87 Coach of the Year. In 1985-86, he guided the Toreros to a fine record of 19-9 and was named Co-Coach of the Year in the WCC, sharing the honor with UCLA's Jim Harrick (formerly head coach at Pepperdine).

A recognized expert in the technical aspects of the game, Hank has an impeccable reputation for integrity, and is a coach who "gets the most" out of his players. Acknowledged as one of the finest defensive coaches in the nation, good defense is a trademark with Egan-coached teams. His 1986-87 team finished #1 in the nation in field goal percentage defense (40.1%) and in the top-ten in scoring defense (60.3). His 1985-86 team finished 8th in the nation in FGO/o defense, limiting opponents to 42.4% shooting . Prior to USO, Hank coached at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs for eighteen years, thirteen as the head coach . Highlights of his coaching career include his 1986-87 club that finished 24-6 and participated in the NCAA Tournament, his 1985-86 team that finished 19-9, and his 16-9 Air Force club from 1976. As evidence of the high regard in which he is held by his colleagues and basketball people in general, Hank was the alternate coach to George Raveling (USC) for the 1984 United States Olympic Basketball team; he was a coach in the Olympic tryouts in Bloomington , Indiana, and also scouted South American Olympic teams in San Paulo, Brazil; he is a member of the Legislative Commission of the National Basketball Coaches Association of America; and, was one of the only ten coaches chosen in 1984 by the NCAA to participate and represent the country's coaches in a special meeting of Presidents, Athletic Directors, and Faculty Representatives called to ~tudy the strengthening of academic requirements for intercollegiate athletics. Before becoming the second head coach in Air Force basketball history, Egan was the freshman mentor for two seasons and was chief scout and recruiter during the 1970-71 season . From 1966 to 1968, he was an assistant junior varsity coach. A three-time basketball letterman at Navy, he also played several seasons on Air Force service teams and has coached on both the military and AAU levels. Hank graduated from the Naval Academy in 1960 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering . His hobbies include golf, racquetball, reading and crossword puzzles. Hank and his wife Judy have two children , John and Kelly.

ASSISTANT COACHES

GUS MAGEE Gus enters his 21st season as a member of the University of San Diego coaching staff. He began his coaching career in 1970 as a graduate assistant to Bernie Bickerstaff while pursuing his Master's Degree in Social Science. He joined former USO coach Jim Brovelli in 1973.

Gus also completed his undergraduate degree at the Univers– ity of San Diego and was a top basketball player here after completing his tour of duty with the U.S. Air Force. Gus played here from 1966-70, his first three years under legendary coach Phil Wool pert, and his final campaign with Bernie Bickerstaff. With him at center the Toreros had a 53-48 record. He was twice selected the team's most valuable player, in 1968-69 and again in 1969-70. He still holds most of the USO rebounding records including career boards (948), most in a single game (24), and the single season rebounding average (14.4). Gus was the first USO alumnus to be inducted into the USO Basketball Hall of Fame. He takes great pride in being involved with USO basketball since 1966 and in helping it to grow from a small college program to its current status as a member of the NCAA Division One ranks and the West Coast Conference. He is currently an Administrative Analyst with the San Diego Public Library System. Gus and his wife Faye have one son, Mark.

JACK AVINA A new addition to Hank Egan's coaching staff, Jack Avina brings a wealth of experience to USO. At the helm of the University of Portland program for 17 years (1970-87), Jack will be on staff in a part-time capacity and will be involved exclusively with teaching situations and in direct contact with the players.

As head coach of the University of Portland of the West Coast Conference, Avina posted a 17-year mark of 222-243. He is cur– rently the tenth winningest coach in WCC history. In his last 10 seasons with the Pilots, Jack averaged 15 wins per season. His 1977-78 squad may have been his best, finishing 19-8 overall and 9-5 in the league, earning Avina WCC Coach of the Year honors. He started at the University of Portland after coaching at three different high schools and at San Mateo JC in California. His JC teams had a combined 140-80 record. Between 1987-89 he was head coach of a professional team in Turkey. During the summer of 1984, he worked with Coach Egan at the Olympic Tryouts in Bloomington, Indiana. Jack and his wife Claire have six children and make their home in Portland, Oregon.

QUTLOOK

1990-1991 TORERO OUTLOOK

Recent history indicates that the team with the most experience normally wins the West Coast Conference men's basketball title. Look at Loyola Marymount last season, St. Mary's in '88-89, LMU in '87-88 and USD in '86-87. All were veteran-rich teams and all went on to dominate the conference. Guess What? The Toreros of 1990-91 are by far the most experienced club in the WCC. Consider: There are only 19 seniors in the entire conference, and 6 of them are Toreros. The next closest-Portland and USF– have just 4 seniors each . St. Mary's and Santa Clara do not have any. Pepperdine has 1 and Gonzaga and LMU 2 each. Of the juniors, Santa Clara leads with 7, followed by USD and St. Mary's with 6 each. LMU, Pepperdine and Gonzaga have 5 each, USF 4 and Portland 2. In case you weren't keeping track, that's 12 upperclassmen for USD, or four more than USF, the second most ex– perienced team. That, in part, is why many feel USD is the team to beat in the wee. But there is certainly much more to winning cham– pionships than having old players. It also takes talent. And USD has that, too. Ten of those 12 upperclassmen return from a team that last season fin ished third in the wee at 9-5. The overall record was 16-12, representing eight more victories than the 1988-89 team that finished 8-20, 2-12 in the conference. Eight of the 10 returning upperclassmen started games last season. Four aver– aged 8.3 ppg or better for the Toreros, who set a school record by averaging 79.1 ppg. Add to that nucleus two junior trans– fers from Mesa CC (Ariz.), the No. 1-ranked team in the nation last season , and the Toreros appear even stronger. ''This year we're a little bit better because we're more experienced, and we have some depth ," said Coach Hank Egan , who in his 20th season (7th at USD) is the second most experienced coach in the WCC behind Santa Clara's Carroll Williams (21st year). Barring a complete collapse-unlikely with this bunch-Egan will record his 250th career win sometime this season . Egan enters the year with 242. What's more, Egan has added long– time friend Jack Avina as a part-time

his troops for a meeting on Christmas night. He told them, as a present to them, he was going to ease off, quit pushing for answers and just let things happen as they happen. It was a risky move and slightly out-of– character for Egan , and even the players expressed skepticism. But Egan held true to his word . He was verbally less demanding , appeared less tense and even acted jovial at times on the sidelines. Suddenly, the victories began piling up. USD won its next three games and later seven in a row. It finished the regular season winning 12 of 17. Then came the wee Tournament at LMU 's Gersten Pavilion, a tournament few will ever forget. USD had defeated USF (80-74) in a first-round game and was at the team's hotel preparing to face Pepperdine in a semifinal when LMU center Hank Gathers collapsed on the floor during the Lions' semifinal against Portland. He died of heart failure a few hours later at a nearby hospital. The tournament was cancelled . USD, Pepperdine and Portland- all playing their best basketball of the year– suddenly found their seasons over, mak– ing them and Nevada Las Vegas (the NCAA champion) the only schools in the nation whose seasons ended with a tournament victory. It was a tragic ending , but one USD players understood and soon realized to accept. For seniors Craig Cottrell and John Jerome, their careers had ended. " It was tough for us to swallow," Cottrell said. " But we understood." USD will surely miss the scoring and leadership of Jerome and Cottrell. Without them, USD loses 28.5 points and 11.2 rebounds per game. Jerome, an AII– WCC first team selection , set single season school records for points (540) and scoring average (19.3). Cottrell set a school record for career field goal percentage (.5803). Attrition , though , doesn't concern Egan this year. Instead, he feels USD will be improved defensively. "I always felt last year we had to outscore people, because we weren't go– ing to stop anybody," Egan said. This year should be different, Egan added. "Competition at some positions is pretty close. assistant coach this season . Avina, who was the head coach at Portland for 17 years and is the 10th winningest coach in WCC history, joins part-time assistant Gus Magee (21 years) and full-time assistants Randy Bennett (four) and Todd Lee (two) on the Toreros' bench. Avina actually began helping out as a volunteer last season , and he was the one that convinced Egan to modify his approach after the team's 3-7 start. Egan was naturally upset with the poor beginning. He felt the team was better, but couldn't figure out why it wasn't win– ning. The low-point came after con– secutive home losses to Eastern Washington (79-64) and Nevada-Reno (88-69). Then came December 25. After a few days off, Egan assembled

With experience and an improved defense, USD's biggest strength is prob– ably its lack of weaknesses. But by the same token, its biggest weakness might be its lack of strengths. USO is not terribly big, but it's not small either. It has some good shooters, but not an overabundance. What it has is a little bit of everything. Realizing what works and what does not will be impor– tant. Playing as a team, as it did in the

sr.) give USO one of the best returning backcourts in the wee. Holbert, an AII-WCC honorable men– tion and among the nation's best 3-point shooters with a .462 mark, was USD's second-leading scorer last season, averaging 12.3 ppg. He really turned things up, though, in the second half, averaging 17.0 points in conference play and matching a season-high with 27 points in the first game of the wee Tournament. "His emergence last year is one of the main factors that turned this ballclub around," Egan said. After sharing and struggling with the point guard role his freshman year, Strickland came into his own last year. His 169 assists were 100 more than his total the previous year and just two off the school record of 171 set by Stan Washington in 1972-73. Strickland , who started all but one game last year, was also second in the conference with 2.2 steals per game. Another guy that added some spark in the second half was forward Anthony Thomas (6-4, sr.). Coming off the bench on most nights, Thomas averaged 6.9 points and provided good defense both inside and out on the perimeter. Gylan Dottin (6-5, jr.), the Toreros' second-leading scorer two years ago, was in that same position last year before he broke his nose in practice after just three conference games. He sat out seven games mending but still averaged 8.6 points per game. Dottin is a versatile player capable of filling any one of the three perimeter spots. Another versatile player is newcomer Michael Brown (6-3, jr.), one of five former Mesa Community College players at USO. Joe Temple (6-3, so.), Geoff Probst (5-11 , so.), Neal Meyer (6-3, fr.) and Carlos Carrillo (6-6, jr.) give USO plenty of depth and experience. And then there's Randy Thompson (6-7, sr.). Said Egan, "I don't know where Randy's going to play, but I know he's go– ing to play, because he always does." INSIDE PLAYERS Returners Kelvin Woods (6-5, jr.) and Dondi Bell (6-9, sr.) figure to be the early– season starters inside, but Brooks Barn– hard (6-8, so.) and first-year forward Reed Watson (6-8, jr.) should challenge for those spots. Keith Colvin (6-8, sr.) pro– vides Egan with experience and annual surprises with his spirited play in big games. Shawn Hamilton (6-8, sr.) adds

size and depth. Woods was third in scoring (9.4 ppg) and rebounding (4.0) last season. He will be called on to pick up some of the in– side scoring that Jerome did last year. "He's a really good inside scorer," Egan said. "He knows how to get the ball in the basket." Bell, the wee blocked shot leader two years ago, had a big second half last year and was instrumental in the team's turn– around. His biggest contribution should be rebounding, blocked shots and defense. "We're not going to be super big, so we're going to have to work well to– gether," added Egan. "We don't have that one monster in the middle. That's probably the area of concern . We're giv– ing up in that area something offensively and defensively because we don't have that awesome power inside." After a couple of tune-up exhibitions against Athletes in Action and an Australian team, USO begins for real Nov. 27th against cross-town rival San Diego State at the Sports Arena. The Toreros' home opener is Dec. 1st against San Jose State. A trip to the Indiana Tournament and UC Santa Barbara high– light 10 other dates before opening wee play Jan. 5 at Santa Clara. In all, there are 27 games-13 at the USO Sports Center-before the wee Tournament at Santa Clara, March 2-4. " I think it's a pretty good schedule," Egan said. "It's got enough good teams in it, and it will prepare us well for the conference." "We got a chance to be pretty good," Egan added. "There's no guarantee on that happening, but we got a chance." By Jim Lindgren, Los Angeles Times San Diego County Edition

second half of last season , is what will pull USO through the tough games. "One of the things about having a veteran ball club is that the guys kind of know who's got what spot," Egan said. "Not that it's locked in, but they're com– fortable with themselves and with one another and the system. And now they can go about their business of beating somebody, instead of worrying who's go– ing to make the ball club or win a spot. Everybody knows their roles. Certain people should shoot the ball, and certain people should rebound, and certain peo– ple should pass. Knowing their roles, without having to get them established, should really help." With that, here's a look at the players and the roles they should play in 1990-91. Since most of the Toreros are versatile athletes, Egan employs them in a number of positions. For the most part, they can be categorized as either perimeter or inside players. PERIMETER PLAYERS Point guard Wayman Strickland (6-2, jr.) and shooting guard Pat Holbert (6-3,
