Head Coach Hank Egan begins his seventh season with the USO Toreros and twentieth as a Division I head coach . This past season he successfully molded his squad into a 16-12 team that finished 3rd in the competitive West Coast Con– ference. He has tallied an impressive six-year record at San Diego of 94-75, as well as a 61-24 mark in the USO Sports Center. His .556 overall winning percentage at USO is tops among the nine different coaches that have been at the helm of the USO basketball program. Entering his twentieth year, Coach Egan takes a career mark of 242-260 into the 1990-91 campaign . Sandwiched between this past season's mark of 16-12 and the 1986-87 squad that went 24-6 and won the WCC regular-season crown, the Toreros struggled with young teams that went 11-17 ('87-88) and 8-20 ('88-89). With twelve upper– classmen slated for this season's roster, it looks promising for the Toreros to field another competitive and successful team. At the NCAA's in 1986-87, the team suffered a tough 62-61 loss to Auburn University in the tournament's first round; however, the USO men's basketball team completed its most successful season ever. Along the way, USO won fourteen consecutive games, won the regular– season West Coast Conference championship with a 13-1 record and finished with a school record 24 victories. Coach Egan's peers from the WCC voted him the 1986-87 Coach of the Year. In 1985-86, he guided the Toreros to a fine record of 19-9 and was named Co-Coach of the Year in the WCC, sharing the honor with UCLA's Jim Harrick (formerly head coach at Pepperdine).

A recognized expert in the technical aspects of the game, Hank has an impeccable reputation for integrity, and is a coach who "gets the most" out of his players. Acknowledged as one of the finest defensive coaches in the nation, good defense is a trademark with Egan-coached teams. His 1986-87 team finished #1 in the nation in field goal percentage defense (40.1%) and in the top-ten in scoring defense (60.3). His 1985-86 team finished 8th in the nation in FGO/o defense, limiting opponents to 42.4% shooting . Prior to USO, Hank coached at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs for eighteen years, thirteen as the head coach . Highlights of his coaching career include his 1986-87 club that finished 24-6 and participated in the NCAA Tournament, his 1985-86 team that finished 19-9, and his 16-9 Air Force club from 1976. As evidence of the high regard in which he is held by his colleagues and basketball people in general, Hank was the alternate coach to George Raveling (USC) for the 1984 United States Olympic Basketball team; he was a coach in the Olympic tryouts in Bloomington , Indiana, and also scouted South American Olympic teams in San Paulo, Brazil; he is a member of the Legislative Commission of the National Basketball Coaches Association of America; and, was one of the only ten coaches chosen in 1984 by the NCAA to participate and represent the country's coaches in a special meeting of Presidents, Athletic Directors, and Faculty Representatives called to ~tudy the strengthening of academic requirements for intercollegiate athletics. Before becoming the second head coach in Air Force basketball history, Egan was the freshman mentor for two seasons and was chief scout and recruiter during the 1970-71 season . From 1966 to 1968, he was an assistant junior varsity coach. A three-time basketball letterman at Navy, he also played several seasons on Air Force service teams and has coached on both the military and AAU levels. Hank graduated from the Naval Academy in 1960 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering . His hobbies include golf, racquetball, reading and crossword puzzles. Hank and his wife Judy have two children , John and Kelly.
