Millicent Melissa Manyaka’s Story of Change Situated in the centre of our community, next to the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Maloma

Primary was built by the Roman Catholic Church but became a government school in 1936.

MY JOURNEY

I started working as a Grade R teacher at Maloma Primary in 2004. With diplomas in Educare and in Early Childhood Development (ECD; NQF level 5), I am presently in my final year studying a diploma in Grade R teaching (NQF level 6) at North West University (NWU). I became involved in environmental issues in 2005 through participating in a water-saving project.

Maloma Primary joined the WESSA Eco-School Programme in 2008 and I have been an Environmental Coordinator since 2013. The school’s food garden started in 2014. The Feed a Child Programme gave generous donations of winter- and summer season vegetable seedlings, as well as nutritious porridge for needy children – who eat breakfast at school. Trees for Africa donated around 20 trees, some indigenous trees to provide shade, others for fruit.

People have learned that nothing should be regarded as waste. Throughout my eco-journey I have realised that caring for the environment has a way of changing how people see themselves and that they can connect with nature in many ways. “ ”
