“I mpossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they ’ ve been given than to explore the power they have to change it . I mpossible is not a fact . I t ’ s an opinion . I mpossible is not a declaration . I t ’ s a dare . I mpossible is potential . I mpossible is temporary . I mpossible is nothing .” – M uhammad A li P ower is on our mind these days. The politics of power, the appropriate use of power, the power to overcome. It’s no wonder: we shot our cover story at the venerable Gleason’s Gym, New York’s last man standing of boxing’s Golden Age. Gleason’s has hosted fighters from Tyson and Camacho to Muhammed Ali. We were lucky enough to shoot there a few days before its Front Street location closed its doors and moved to a new address (the gym’s 4th in its 80-year history) to make way for luxury condominiums. (A true New York story!) The gritty space was nonstop noise and nonstop motion (until they did the mannequin challenge that is, midway through the day). Amateur fighters, pros, fashion models and our stylish kids commingled through the space, trading off in and out of the ring. A couple pro fighters even made it into the ring with us, good sports indeed. Gleason’s was the real deal, reeking of warmth, camaraderie and determination, mixed with, of course, some good old fashioned sweat. These days we all need to conjure up our inner prizefighters—the world’s uncertain, it’s all truths vs. post truths and facts vs. “alternative facts,” where effect trumps cause—and we found Gleason’s a surprising place of order, solace and inspiration. So akin to Babesta’s values were those of these prizefighters: independent in their spirits, unique in their gifts, light on their feet, laser focused, yet ever-moving. We left the gym that day recharged, ready to face whatever challenges come our way, with a quote from Virgil ringing in our heads (and emblazoned on the back of our new Gleason’s tees we couldn’t help but snap up): “Now whoever has courage, and a strong and collected spirit in his breast, let him come forward, lace on the gloves and put up his hands.” spring forward WITH Babe sta Beat!

DON’T MISS | THE GOLDEN THRONE There might be no more apt time in U.S. history for Maurizio Cattelan’s “America”---a functioning golden toilet (18-karat), intended for public use, installedattheGuggenheim Museum.TheItalianartist is no stranger to the Guggenheim, coming off a 5-year sabbatical, after a retrospective of his work in 2011-12. Returning with the ultimate participatory piece, Cattelan shines a satirical light on the American dreamwhile having fun with the excess of the elite. It continues as a fun family day, celebrating sport and culture Flushing Meadows Park, Saturday August 12th & Sunday August 13th.

BEHOLD | REI KAWAKUBO AT THE MET The woman behind avant guarde label Comme des Garcons takes the stage at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. Art of the In-Between examines Kawakubo’s work, which is ever unexpected, often “between dualities” of East and West, male and female and past and present. The fantasy fashion imagines a world less rigid and constrained, seeing beauty in that which cannot be defined. May 4 - September 4th, Met Museum, 5th Avenue.

W e ’ ve never seen such a chic solution for toting a baby. The Yema by Cybex is a true fashion forward carrier, easily used when carrying your baby on your front, side or back. Unlike any other carrier we’ve seen, it’s designed to complement a downtown ensemble (think Rick Owens top and a cool pair of jeans). Not only seamless with your wardrobe, this carrier has all the functionality for comfortable and safe mobility. The carrier features padded straps and an adjustable head and neck rest, comfortable waist belt with security loop, and even a hidden interior pocket. The Yema encourages a healthy spread-squat position, keeping the baby’s weight away from the hips so joints develop properly. Of course, for a city mama, a chic carrier is covet-worthy, as you can live your fast paced urban life, benefit from the strong bonding and cognitive development stimulation that babywearing encourages, and look great all the while. HATCH HATCH FOR KIDS GIVES GEN Z A TASTE OF THE BEST ’80S & ’90S POP CULTURE WITH THEIR FRESH LINE OF TEES. chatting with FORKIDS “T oo many skateboarding dinosaurs, not enough ODB,” says Hunter Ashton, Hatch for Kids founder. Hatch was born to be the go-to for parents and kids looking for next level, authentic pop culture cool. Launched in 2012, the kids’ label almost instantly bestowed rock star dad status on new father and designer Ashton. The high fidelity designs range from Tupac, Biggie, Wu-Tang, and Digital Underground to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Animal House, and The Breakfast Club.

The name Hatch is not what you think: Rather than a nod to a fluffy chick newly sprung from its egg, it’s an ode to the hatch green chili, a staple food from the Southwest, where Ashton and his wife and partner Sara lived prior to a move to Portland, Oregon. Like the chili, the clothing line Hatch is always fresh and flame roasted. Hatch is a family-run company where everyone has a role: Ashton designs, preps and works logistics on the tees, Sara takes the ropes on the garment prep and day-to-day tasks, and the kids get into the action modeling the duds for the website and catalogs. Loving all things vintage the duo propelled their day jobs with Etsy and visual artistry into the vibrant brand where they could have complete creative control. Ashton says, “Each pop culture reference in the Hatch brand is based on the artists we love. His eras of choice are the ’80s & ’90s, what he sees as the heyday of music, movies and TV. (For instance, the fist-in-the-air Bender tee celebrates the essential high school fight against being boxed in by convenient stereotypes, coming none too soon for their toddler clientele.) “There’s never going to be another John Hughes,” he asserts. Ain’t that the truth! A day’s itinerary at Hatch is something that any working parent can understand. “Wake up between 6-7AM, check weather and news, breakfast, kids off to school and commence all things

Hatch: emails, fill the day’s orders, daily book keeping, lunch break at home or at one of our many “go-to” spots around Portland, then back to work for more emails, order fulfillment and some designing if there’s time,” says Ashton. The end of the day is chock full of family time, and an occasional date night if they’re lucky. Not all work and no play, the family of four takes time to enjoy Portland—they can be found taking in a Blazer’s game at Moda Center, hanging on Northwest 23rd or just chilling with a good book at Powell’s. The future is bright, of course for this brand that hits nostalgic cool square on the head. Ashton says that the Hatch team has some pop up shops brewing, and, of course, more rad designs on the horizon. The rock star collection of tees continues to amass groupies from theWest Coast and East Coast and everywhere in between. Ashton is content with his gig making tees and building a brand based on key pop culture greats in music, art and movies, and urges others to find that thing that makes them feel like Monday can’t come soon enough. It’s almost like happy little clouds follow over his head—making it no surprise that PBS painter extraordinaire, Bob Ross, finds his way into the collection with a dedicated tee. Borrowing the artist’s ever-upbeat words, with a sentiment that the risk-taking creatives at Hatch attest to, happiness comes when you follow your own beat: “You can do anything you want. This is your world.”

I n order to teach manners to your children, you need to not only model them but you must employ them sincerely in your own life, says Lizzie Post, the president of the Emily Post Institute, an organization dedicated to etiquette rules of the modern world. Post says, it’s never to early to start teaching: “even when baby’s in the womb.” The earlier you start notes Post, the more successful you’ll be. “Children will hear the language used and there is not push-back like one might experience with a child in their ‘terrible twos’ or is a pre-teen. By the time the child is older they will have been raised in an environment of good manners,” Post adds, explaining how manners will come naturally. We were able to chat with Post about some of the most pressing manners questions facing families today. Lizzy Post of the Emily Post Institute answers our most pressing family etiquette questions lil miss&mr. MANNERS

Tableside Digital : “At the table, keep focus on the people you’re with,” says Post, acknowledging the challenges of the digital age and the phones and devices that accompany everyone everywhere. “Both parents should discuss and be on the same page about what’s expected,” Post says. Once in sync, establish the table-time rules and ensure you and your children live by them. No presents please: We’ve all gotten that invitation that insists “no presents please.” It always leaves us anxious, as gift giving is in our DNA! Post agrees that gift giving is an ‘established norm’ that’s not going away any time soon, and thinks that the sentiment, although well meaning, shortchanges the child who loses out on the experience of being a good gift recipient. When this gift giving conundrum arises, respect the family’s wishes but bring a nice card with a personal note. Say “please” and “thank you,” take hats off at dinner, turn off smartphones in class, shake hands and introduce yourself. Flying Fraught: As a parent you always feel for that one person on the plane with a toddler who is just not having it. We’ve all been there and it’s probably toughest and most stressful on the parent who’s trying to keep the tantrum under wraps. Post says, “Comfort the child to the best of your ability. Try to walk down the aisles or switch seats in order to give those sitting around you a break.” It’s not easy but your fellow flyers will see you’re making efforts to help and should understand. Restaurant Meltdown: “The restaurant is not the place to enforce your discipline,” says Post. As Kenny Rogers says, You gotta know when to hold ‘em and when to fold ‘em. Sometimes you just have to leave and go back to your home where you can address the behavior properly. “It’s OK to say that we cannot do this tonight. Not every outing is going to go well and it doesn’t mean you are a bad parent or your child’s a bad child,” Post adds. Computer time: Again, establishing rules and being on the same page as your partner is key. “There’s not a right or wrong answer to what you allow,” Post says. Your child’s friends will have different rules inevitably and yours might be more restrictive when it comes to screen time. When your child’s friend points that out, you can say something like, “I know at your house you can play 2 hours of video games but at our house we play outside. Respect the rules at the given house,” Post notes, adding, “Be the champion for what you think is right for your kids and stand by it.” “

CARRIED AWAY FIND YOUR MOBILITY MATCH. THE NEWEST CARRIER OPTIONS FIT EVERY AGE AND EVERY NEED.

A ny city mama knows that the easiest way to get from point A to point B with baby is with her carrier. Whether a wrap, sling or soft structured, the accessory acts as an extra pair of arms to hold baby tight as you navigate the urban terrain. Not only convenient, a carrier offers important close bonding time with your little babesta. What one will be the perfect fit? Well, that’s not an exact science. “Think function over brand,” says Joanna McNeilly, founder of the Center for Babywearing Studies, noting that as needs change the optimal carrier for you may also change. Also body type, style, goals and even any injuries you might have—a bad back or neck or shoulder issues—come into play when choosing. “For the first three months, you want something comfy that you can get them in and out of quickly, like a sling or wrap. After 3 months, soft structured carriers really shine,” she says. Using a carrier is easy but you want to watch videos or better yet be coached in person the first time, so you feel confident that you’re doing it right. If baby is close enough to kiss, her knees are

higher than her bottom (sometimes called frog position), and there is no space between baby and you (if you sway back and forth it’s as if you are one), you should be in a good place. As for wearing your little one facing you, facing front or on your hip or back, it’s about ages, stages and personal (and baby’s) preference. But don’t let the 4 month push-up fool you notes McNeilly. “At 4 months often babies learn to push against you--they’re getting the strength to sit up and turn over,” she says. Some parents think all that pushing means the baby wants to turn around. “I suggest giving them an additional 2-3 weeks of facing you before you decide whether they want to face out,” she says. The eye to eye contact is essential for non-verbal communication, and it’s harder to address baby’s needs when you’re looking at the back of her head. The biggest takeaway, says McNeilly, is that you want to be comfortable. “Movement is important for an infant, and essential for the parent.” We agree! There’s nothing like hitting the city with no muss or fuss, footloose and hands free.

CAR SEATS EASY AND STRESS FREE! CARSEAT CHEATSHEET

Cybex Cloud Q Plus, 27278, $450.

There are lots of choices for infant car seats, but if you live in the city, be sure to choose a seat with the European belt path router, a tab on the back of the seat which allows easy and safe installation without the base. Another tip: just pay for the features you need. For instance, if you are installing in the center seat in the back, you might not need the telescoping side impact protection, but if you install on the side, that’s a key feature! Also, to ensure you have a great travel system, choose a car seat that is compatible with your stroller. We love the Cybex Aton2, Q and Q Cloud and the Nuna Pipa! Here’s the thing: Car seats can feel daunting. They are technical and you need the right one installed the right way to ensure its safety. There are features you surely want if you live in the city, that suburban parents needn’t worry about. As baby grows you have to adjust straps and later seats. Seems like a lot, right? No sweat! With the latest crop of car seats created to simplify installation, and (for NY parents) the storied Car Seat Lady at the ready for training and tips, you can be well equipped to hop into a cab, call an Uber or book a zipcar for the weekend stress free! TO CHOOSE

TO USE

Make sure your straps are snug! No jackets, footmuffs or thick clothing in the car seat (they can compromise safety). Install the infant seat in the center if you can - it’s the safest! When installing, move the front seats up to give yourself plenty of room. Use your body weight on the base while pulling the seat belt or latch belt tight. Be sure to watch some installation videos. We suggest the car seat brand videos or the Car Seat Lady’s! Mind the maximums: if baby is bigger than the seat suggests, it’s time to convert to a convertible!

CONVERTIBLE CAR SEATS

The convertible car seat is the step up from the Infant. At about 12 months or so, baby will graduate to this bigger, heavier seat. The convertible is so called because it can be installed rear or forward facing. Remember, rear facing is safest, so be sure to have baby facing back as long as possible! Although the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends having kids rear facing to at least age 2, many seats allow them to do so until age 4.

TO CHOOSE

Shopping for a convertible car seat? The things to look out for are safety features, LATCH and weight limits. The Nuna Rava and Clek Foonf and Fllo are stand outs for their easy installation and abundance of features!

Nuna Rava convertible car seat, 30667, $450.

TO USE

Keep children rear facing as long as possible. Always use the tether strap when facing forward. As with the infant car seat, before installing, watch videos and have a video handy on your phone! After installing your seat, have it reviewed by a technician. Make sure to use it every single time you get in a car. Don’t take a risk!

GET A BOOST! After the convertible car seat, comes the booster. Intended for bigger kids, this seat is just a positioner to ensure that the seat belt is placed in the correct places

GREEN MACHINE S eems like everyone ’ s going green these days! Whether they’re drinking a kale-fortified juice or strolling down the street, it seems that green is the new grey that was the new black. We’ve spied the gender neutral hue on the new Kite stroller by Bugaboo, the latest mint canopy on the BabyZen (due out this May), and even on Ergo’s latest 360 carrier. Turns out it is easy to be green!

The special edition stroller comes with a 3 layer muslin blanket in a soft grey print. Energized for the springtime, the world’s first modular stroller is ready to hit the streets so fresh and so green!

Meet Henry! UPPAbaby’s newest colorway has a unique texture and faux leather handlebar to boot. As longtime fans of the Vista for its amazing under seat basket, super suspension and city-readiness, we’re impressed by this latest update!
