AOAC SPIFAN Stakeholder Panel Meeting Book (March 12, 2020)

Topics

• Immune modulating activity • Cell proliferation and differentiation • Natural and synthetic peptides • Bacterial interactions • Lactoferrin and infectious diseases • Lactoferrin applications • Lactoferrin characterization, bioavailability and bioequivalence • Mini symposium: Lactoferrin and neonatal sepsis • Lactoferrin and infant formula

• LF has many different functions (anti bacterial, anti viral, anti tumor, etc) • No clarity around biologically active form of LF • No consensus about level of iron saturation of LF (depending on function, iron transport or iron scavenging) • Pasteurization followed by aggregation of human LF seems to be reversible in stomach conditions after which the LF is still active (Bo Lonnerdal) • LF has bio-active peptides which can be relevant to the infant (lactoferricin, anti-microbial; lactoferrampin, anti- microbial). In infant gastric samples parts of bio-active peptides are found but not full sequence • There is a high need for a standardized method for both LF ingredient and LF in end formula
