AOAC SPIFAN Stakeholder Panel Meeting Book (March 12, 2020)

Summary of Existing Methods for Nutrient in OMA, Chapter 50 AOAC Technology scope Remarks

Meets SMPR?

2011.06 LC-MSMS

Total folate incl. Folic acid, 5-MTHF, 5-FTHF and polyglutamates

yes

CODEX Type II: For infant formulas product label verification a method is needed determining total folate and at the same time able to distinguish between the amount of synthetic folic acid (used for fortification) and natural folates, enabling the use of Dietary Folate Equivalents to express the amount. Labeled 5-FTHF standard availability? Milk-based IF: no other folates present (E. Campos-Giménez et al. Food Chem 2018). Soy-based IF: 6-8% of total folate. Method recommended to keep in OMA, saves time and costs. Reproducibility data to be collected. Folates quantified in SLV meet SMPR. CXS 234: Type II for FSMP. Type III for IF. Codex CFNFSDU (2019) requested to keep MBA methods in use.

2013.13 LC-MSMS

'free' folate: i.e. folic acid and 5-methyl THF

no

992.05 MBA

Free folic acid

no

Conclusions

AOAC 2011.06, CODEX Type II, fit for purpose. SD to investigate availability of labeled 5-FTHF. AOAC 2013.13, useful for product release/quick label verification. Recommended to collect reproducibility data for Final action status. AOAC 992.05, CODEX Type II for FSMP recommended to change to Type III. CCNFSDU asked to keep MBA methods because they are still in use.
