Joe Thompson, Ph.D., Abbott Nutrition Minerals & Trace Elements

Joseph J. Thompson, Ph.D. is currently Sr. Principal Research Scientist, Global Analytical/Food Safety Dept. for Abbott Nutrition based in Columbus, Ohio. He has been with Abbott for over 20 years, in which time he has developed, validated, trained, and transferred all the ICP- AES and ICP-MS methods for minerals at the Division. His group also currently handles the methods for proximates and vitamins in global

nutritional products. His B.A. in chemistry (summa cum laude) was obtained from the University of St. Thomas, St Paul, MN and his Ph.D. is from Iowa State University, where he was the first graduate student of Dr. “Sam” Houk, the “father” of ICP-mass spectrometry. Prior to joining Abbott, Dr. Thompson was an Assistant Professor in the Chemistry Department at Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana.

Dr. Thompson lives in Columbus, Ohio with his wife and three children. He enjoys golf, running, gardening, choir, and is a near-expert bridge and chess player.
